Obihiro sits in the middle of the Tokachi plain, which supplies a large share of Japan's dairy and beans, and its cooking follows — butadon, grilled pork on rice, was invented here in the 1930s.

The town keeps the last ban'ei racing in the world, where draught horses drag weighted sledges up sand ramps at walking pace. Rokkatei's confectionery comes from here, and the hot springs run brown with peat.

    Hokkaido Obihiro Museum of Art

    A prefectural art museum opened in 1991 in Midorigaoka Park, holding prints and posters, with a strong group of works by artists of the Tokachi plain. It is the fifth of Hokkaido's prefectural galleries.

    Obihiro Shrine

    A shrine raised in 1910 as the Tokachi plain was settled, dedicated to Okuni-mitama, Okuninushi and Sukunabikona. Ranked a prefectural shrine before the war, it keeps its annual festival on 24 September, and squirrels are fed in the wooded grounds.

    Obihiro Centennial City Museum

    A museum opened at Obihiro in 1982, covering the natural history, settlement and farming of the Tokachi plain, with a research room devoted to Ainu history and culture.

    Tokachigawa Onsen

    A hot spring on the Tokachi river whose water is drawn up through beds of peat, making it one of the few moor springs in the world: brown, alkaline and soft on the skin. Cranes winter in the marshes close by.
