Izu Ōshima is an active volcano an hour and three quarters from Tokyo by jetfoil, and legally part of the city. Mount Mihara erupted in 1986 and the whole island was evacuated for a month.

The crater is walked across a black plain of ash and cinder. Camellias flower from January to March and the island holds a festival for them. There are hot springs looking out at the sea, and Fuji on the horizon in clear weather.

    Mount Mihara

    The active volcano that makes up Izu Oshima, an hour and three quarters from Tokyo by jetfoil and legally part of the city. Its 1986 eruption sent fountains of lava sixteen hundred metres up and the entire population of ten thousand was evacuated for a month.

    The trough off Izu Oshima where the Philippine Sea plate goes under Honshu, and the source of the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923. It is not a sight so much as the reason this coast is shaped as it is.
