Beppu produces more hot spring water than anywhere else in Japan, from a couple of thousand vents; steam rises out of drains and back gardens all over town.

The hells are eight springs kept for looking rather than bathing — one cobalt blue, one blood red. At Takegawara you are buried in hot sand. Myōban's thatched huts crystallise bath minerals, and food is cooked in the steam.

Funai Castle
A castle built in 1562 by Otomo Sorin, the Christian daimyo who ruled much of Kyushu and sent the first Japanese embassy to Rome. The keep is gone; the moat, stone walls and a reconstructed turret stand in the middle of the modern city.

Beppu Tower
A hundred-metre lattice tower of 1957 in the middle of Beppu, one of six built across Japan by the same engineer who designed Tokyo Tower. It was put up to draw tourists to the hot springs and is now a registered cultural property in its own right.

Sasamuta Shrine
A Shinto shrine at Soda in the city of Ōita in Ōita prefecture. It is one of the shrines claiming to be the ichinomiya of the old province of Bungo, and holds its great festival on 15 April each year.

Hiji Castle
A castle that stood at Hiji in Ōita prefecture. Work began in 1601 at the wish of Kinoshita Nobutoshi, who had come from Himeji, and his brother-in-law Hosokawa Tadaoki designed it.

Oita Marine Palace Aquarium
An aquarium on the Takasaki coast known for its walrus and sea-lion shows and for a tank of Seto Inland Sea fish. The wild macaques of Mount Takasaki are immediately behind it, so the two are usually done together.

Kitsuki Castle
An Edo-period hill castle at Kitsuki in Ōita prefecture. The site was made a national historic site in 2020, and the keep rebuilt in 1970 is said to be the smallest in Japan.

Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden
A park on Mount Takasaki in the city of Ōita in Ōita prefecture. Large troops of wild Japanese macaques live there, which is why it is also called the Takasakiyama monkey park.
