   San Simplicio, Olbia

   A granite basilica raised late in the 11th century on a hill outside the old walls, over a burial ground in use since Carthaginian times and an earlier church of about the year 600. The vaults and upper walls followed in the 12th century, the facade by the middle of it.

   A megalithic fortification on the 246-metre summit of Punta Casteddu, north of Olbia in Sardinia. A five-metre stone wall more than fifty metres across encloses a small tholos nuraghe.

   Giants' grave of Coddu Vecchiu

   A Bronze Age tomb of the nuraghic culture near Arzachena in northern Sardinia. It is made up of a stele, standing stones and a gallery grave, and is among the largest giants' tombs on the island; the nuraghe La Prisgiona stands close by.

   A nuraghic site in the Capichera valley at Arzachena in northern Sardinia. It was occupied from the fourteenth to the ninth century BC, with a village of ninety to a hundred buildings spread over five hectares around the tower.

   An archaeological site at Olbia in Sardinia. It was built as a gallery tomb in the Bonnanaro period and converted around 1600 BC into a giants' tomb by adding a forecourt and a central stele.

   Pozzo sacro di Sa Testa

   A nuragic sacred well beside the coast road from Olbia to Golfo Aranci, in Sardinia. Shepherds looking for water came upon it in the 1930s; it was excavated in 1938 and restored in 1969.

   A pair of small sandy coves on the Costa Smeralda, divided by a headland of wind-worn granite and looking out to the islets of the Maddalena. Juniper and mastic scrub runs down almost to the water.

    Castello di Pedres

    A ruined castle on a granite knoll north of Olbia, built in the 13th century by the judges of Gallura to watch the road inland. Its square keep still stands two storeys high, with a nuraghe and a rock-cut tomb on the same hill.
