   Carnegie Museum of Natural History

   A natural history museum founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1896 and holding twenty-two million specimens. Diplodocus carnegii was described from here in 1901 and casts of it were given to European heads of state, which is why the same skeleton stands in London, Paris and Berlin.

   Fort Duquesne

   The French fort of 1754 at the forks of the Ohio, the object of the campaign that began the Seven Years' War, and the fort Washington failed to take as a young officer. The French blew it up in 1758 as the British approached; its outline is marked in Point State Park.

   Andy Warhol Museum

   The largest museum in North America devoted to one artist, opened in 1994 in a converted warehouse seven floors high, in Warhol's home city. It holds 900 paintings, nearly 2,000 films and videotapes, and the 610 sealed Time Capsules he filled with everyday debris.

   Carnegie Museum of Art

   An art museum founded in 1895 as the first in the United States devoted to contemporary work, which Carnegie meant to fill with the old masters of the future. The Carnegie International survey has run since 1896, and the Hall of Architecture holds full-size plaster casts of European facades.

   Fort Pitt

   A British fort built between 1759 and 1761 at the forks of the Ohio, and the largest in North America at the time, on the site the French had just abandoned. Its brick redoubt of 1764 is the oldest building in western Pennsylvania and still stands.

   Oakland

   The academic quarter of Pittsburgh, four kilometres east of downtown, holding the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon along with the Carnegie museums and library. The Cathedral of Learning rises forty-two storeys above it.

   Kamin Science Center

   A science centre on the Allegheny shore with a planetarium, a robotics hall and a two-hundred-square-metre model railroad of western Pennsylvania. The submarine USS Requin is moored at its dock; the centre was renamed in 2024 after a donation.

   Cathedral of Saint Paul

   The Catholic cathedral of Pittsburgh in Oakland, built in 1906 in Gothic Revival after the original downtown site was sold to Henry Clay Frick. Its twin spires stand at Fifth and Craig among the university buildings.

   Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

   A Victorian glasshouse of 1893 in Schenley Park, given by the steel man Henry Phipps, with fourteen rooms under wrought iron and glass. It became the first LEED Platinum visitor centre in the world in 2005 and shows Chihuly glass among the plants.

    Squirrel Hill

    A residential East End neighbourhood and the centre of Jewish Pittsburgh since the 1920s, with Murray Avenue as its main street. Eleven worshippers were murdered at the Tree of Life synagogue here in October 2018, the deadliest antisemitic attack in US history.

   Kennywood

   An amusement park opened in 1898 at the end of a Mellon streetcar line, and one of only two US parks designated a National Historic Landmark. Three wooden coasters from the 1920s still run, along with a 1926 carousel and a dark ride from 1930.

   Steel Curtain

   A steel hypercoaster opened at Kennywood in 2019, named after the Steelers defensive line of the 1970s. Its 67-metre inverted top hat is the tallest of its kind in the world, and it has nine inversions — more than any other coaster in North America.

   Phantom's Revenge

   Opened at Kennywood in 1991 as Steel Phantom, briefly the fastest roller coaster in the world and the one with the longest drop. Rebuilt for the 2001 season, it lost its four inversions and gained a longer second drop, still longer than the first, a rarity among coasters.

   Point State Park

   A fifteen-hectare state park on the point where the Allegheny and Monongahela meet to form the Ohio, and the ground the empires fought over in the 1750s. A fountain shoots forty metres from the tip, fed by a fourth river — an aquifer under the confluence.

   USS Requin

   A Tench-class submarine commissioned in April 1945, later converted to a radar picket to watch for Soviet bombers. She has been moored on the Allegheny beside the science centre since 1990 and is open to walk through, hatch to hatch.

   Sri Venkateswara Temple

   A South Indian temple at Penn Hills consecrated in 1976, and the oldest Hindu temple in the United States built by Indian immigrants. Its Venkateswara deity follows Tirupati, and its granite gopuram was carved by sculptors brought from India.

   National Aviary

   The only independent indoor aviary in the United States, on the North Side since 1952, holding about 500 birds of 150 species. Free-flight rooms let birds cross the visitor path, and it runs breeding programmes for Andean condors and Guam kingfishers.

   Jack Rabbit

   A wooden coaster of 1920 at Kennywood, designed by John Miller and running on a natural ravine, so its double dip drops further than the lift hill climbs. It is one of the oldest coasters in the world still operating.

   South Side

   The district along the south bank of the Monongahela, laid out for mill workers and holding one of the largest intact Victorian streetscapes in the country. East Carson Street has some eighty bars in fifteen blocks, which is what the mills left behind.

    Frick Art & Historical Center

    The estate of the steel and coke magnate Henry Clay Frick, whose 1872 house Clayton stands with its original contents, alongside an art museum and a carriage museum of his cars and coaches. His daughter Helen kept it and left it to the city in 1984.
