   Pula Arena

   A Roman amphitheatre of the first century, and the only one to keep all four of its side towers. It held some twenty thousand and is the sixth largest to survive. The Venetians proposed dismantling it and re-erecting it in Venice in 1583, and were talked out of it.

   SMS Viribus Unitis

   The first Tegetthoff-class dreadnought of the Austro-Hungarian navy, named for Franz Joseph's motto. On 1 November 1918 two Italian frogmen fixed a mine to her hull in Pula harbour; she sank with heavy loss, days after the empire that built her had ceased to exist.

   Arch of the Sergii

   A Roman triumphal arch raised in honour of three members of the Sergius family, taken to date from about 29 to 27 BC. It stood inside the sea gate of the early Roman colony.

   Temple of Augustus

   A temple dedicated to Augustus, the first Roman emperor, and taken to have been built in his lifetime between 27 BC and AD 14. Four Corinthian columns stand across its front; it measures eight by 17.3 metres and stands fourteen metres high, and is in good condition.

   Pula Cathedral

   A co-cathedral at the foot of the hill carrying the seventeenth-century Venetian fortress, on the south side of Pula bay. With the Euphrasian basilica it is one of the two seats of the diocese of Poreč-Pula.

   Nesactium

   The remains of the chief town of the Histri, later a Roman town. It lies in the south of the Istrian peninsula in Croatia between the villages of Muntić and Valtura.

   Chapel of St. Mary Formosa

   A sixth-century Byzantine church that stood at Pula in Croatia, built under the patronage of Maximian, bishop of Ravenna. After Venice sacked the town in 1243 its stone was carried off and used in St Mark's and elsewhere in Venice.
