   Diocletian's Palace

   A palace built about AD 305 for Diocletian's retirement, and the reason Split exists: after Salona fell, refugees moved inside the walls and never left. Around three thousand people still live in it, so the Roman substructures have shops and the peristyle has a café.

   Salona

   The Roman capital of Dalmatia, a city of perhaps sixty thousand with an amphitheatre, aqueduct and early Christian basilicas, destroyed in the seventh century. Its people fled into Diocletian's palace down the coast, which became the town of Split.

   Cathedral of Saint Domnius

   Diocletian's own mausoleum, converted in the seventh century into a cathedral and dedicated to Domnius — a bishop whom Diocletian had executed. It is the oldest building in the world still used as a cathedral, and the emperor's sarcophagus was destroyed in the process.

   Klis Fortress

   A fortress on a rock above the pass inland from Split, held against the Ottomans until 1537 and then held by them for a century and a half. It appeared as a slave city in Game of Thrones, which is now most of its visitor traffic.

   Kamerlengo Castle

   A Venetian fortress of the fifteenth century on the seaward corner of Trogir, built to hold the town and the channel behind it. The wall walk gives the old town on one side and the strait to Čiovo on the other.

   Trogir Cathedral

   The cathedral of St Lawrence at Trogir, begun in 1213 and finished only in the 17th century, so that its stone runs through every Dalmatian style in turn. Radovan carved the west portal in 1240, the first signed sculpture in Croatia; the town centre is UNESCO-listed.

   Marjan

   The pine-covered hill on the Split peninsula, used as a public wood since the third century and still the city's park. Paths climb through the pines to a viewpoint over the palace, the harbour and the islands, and Split runs and swims off its southern rocks.

   Temple of Jupiter, Split

   A Roman temple built inside the palace between 295 and 305, converted into the cathedral's baptistery — so a font stands where Jupiter did, under a barrel vault of interlocking stone blocks. Two medieval archbishops' sarcophagi are in it.

   Hollow Church

   The excavated foundations of an eleventh-century church at Solin in which Croatian kings were crowned, and where the tomb slab of Queen Jelena was found — its inscription of 976 is one of the earliest documents naming the Croatian kingdom.

    Republic Square

    A three-sided neo-Renaissance square open to the sea, built from the 1860s under mayor Antonio Bajamonti in deliberate imitation of St Mark's in Venice. Arcades run round three sides, and concerts fill it through the summer.

   Golden Gate

   The north gate of Diocletian's palace and the one the emperor used, so it carries the most decoration. Ivan Meštrović's enormous bronze of Bishop Gregory of Nin stands outside it, and the statue's protruding toe has been rubbed to a shine.

   Ivan Meštrović Gallery

   The villa the sculptor Ivan Meštrović built in the 1930s as his own house and studio. It was given to the state in 1952 and turned into a gallery; it stands on the slope of Marjan facing the sea.

   Split Synagogue

   A synagogue fitted into two houses against the palace's west wall in the early 1500s, and one of the oldest Sephardi synagogues still in use in the world. Its western wall is the Roman palace wall itself.

   Archaeological Museum Split

   The oldest museum in Croatia, founded in 1820, built around what was dug out of Salona — sarcophagi, inscriptions and mosaics, with the stone laid out along an open arcade round the courtyard. It also holds the Greek material from the Adriatic islands.

   Žnjan

   A coastal district east of central Split. A long stretch of shingle beach and promenade fills with residents on summer evenings, and large open-air events are staged on the shore.

   St Martin's Church

   A church squeezed into the guard passage above the Golden Gate of Diocletian's palace, less than two metres wide and among the oldest in Split. Its carved chancel screen dates from the 11th century, and Dominican sisters from the house next door keep it open.

   Museum of Fine Arts, Split

   The city art gallery, in a converted hospital at the north edge of the palace quarter, covering Dalmatian painting and sculpture from the fourteenth century to the present — including the local icon painters and Meštrović's early work.

   Bijaći

   An early medieval Croatian site near Trogir, with the remains of a ducal residence and the church of St Martha. It appears in the oldest surviving Croatian charters, which makes it one of the founding place names of the state.

   Split Science museum

   A natural history museum and small zoo on the slope of Marjan, in an old house with cases of Adriatic fish, birds and minerals. Its advantage is the position: you leave the exhibition and are immediately in the pine woods.

    Vitturi Castle

    One of the fortified houses strung along Kaštela Bay northwest of Split. Local nobles built it in the sixteenth century to gather the population inside walls, out of reach of Ottoman raids.
