   Church of St. Donatus

   A round pre-Romanesque church begun in the 9th century on the corner of the Roman forum, and the largest building of its age in Croatia. Roman columns and altar stones were laid straight into its walls; no longer used for worship, it is prized for its acoustics and given over to concerts.

   Monument to the Sun

   A circle of glass plates twenty-two metres across set into the quay, whose solar cells power the harbour lighting and, after dark, a light show in the plates themselves. It sits beside the sea organ and was installed by the same architect in 2008.

   Zadar Cathedral

   The largest church in Dalmatia, raised in Romanesque form through the 12th and 13th centuries over an early Christian basilica. Its arcaded west front faces the Roman forum, and the bell tower beside it, finished only in 1892, gives a view across the peninsula.

   Church of St. Nicholas

   A late-11th- or early-12th-century pre-Romanesque church on the Prahulje field a mile from Zadar, between Zaton and Nin. It stands on an earthen pyramid heaped over a Liburnian-era burial mound.

   Church of Holy Cross

   A Croatian pre-Romanesque Catholic church at Nin, going back to the ninth century. It is tiny — often called the smallest cathedral in the world — and its irregular plan works as a sundial through its windows.

   Church of St. Chrysogonus

   A Romanesque church consecrated in 1175 on the site of a Roman emporium, and all that survives of a large Benedictine abbey. Elizabeth of Bosnia, the murdered queen dowager of Hungary, lay buried here in secret from 1387 for three years; the bell tower begun in 1485 was left unfinished.

   St. Mary's Church

   A Benedictine convent church founded in 1066 on the eastern side of the old Roman forum. Its Romanesque bell tower was raised in 1105 under King Coloman of Hungary, and the convent now shows the Gold and Silver of Zadar, a treasury of reliquaries and church plate.
