   Portland Museum of Art

   The oldest and largest art museum in Maine, founded in 1882. It holds Winslow Homer's studio at Prouts Neck, a short drive away and shown by tour, along with Wyeth and Hopper — painters who worked this coast and largely made its reputation.

   Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

   The Catholic cathedral built at Portland in 1869. It is the seat of the Catholic diocese of Maine and is built in brick Gothic Revival.

   Two Lights State Park

   Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum

   A narrow gauge railway museum in Portland. It preserves the two-foot gauge equipment used in Maine in the early twentieth century and runs it along the waterfront.

   Portland Observatory

   A signal tower built on a hill in Portland in 1807. It is the only maritime signal tower left in the United States, and flags flown from it announced ships coming into the harbour.

   Fort Gorges

   A granite fort on a ledge in Casco Bay, built 1858-65 and obsolete before it was finished — rifled artillery had made masonry forts pointless. No shot was ever fired from it and no garrison ever lived in it. It is reached by private boat and is open to walk through.
