   Taichung Mosque

   A mosque built in 1990 in the Nantun district of Taichung, serving Hui Muslims who came from the mainland after 1949 and, more recently, workers from Indonesia. It is the main mosque of central Taiwan.

   National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts

   The national art museum of Taiwan, in West District Taichung, with about 102,000 square metres of site — among the largest museum grounds in Asia — and free admission. It holds the fullest collection of modern and contemporary Taiwanese art, and a sculpture park runs beside it.

   Luce Memorial Chapel

   A chapel of 1963 on the Tunghai University campus, designed by I. M. Pei with Chen Chi-kwan as four hyperbolic-paraboloid shells that lean together without touching. It is one of the defining works of modern architecture in Taiwan.

   Taichung Park

   The oldest park in Taichung, laid out in 1903, with a twin-roofed pavilion standing on piles in its lake. The pavilion has become the emblem of the city and appears on its official documents.

   National Museum of Natural Science

   Taiwan's national science museum, in Taichung, and among the most visited museums on the island. Its dinosaur hall is the draw for children, and a botanical greenhouse of tropical plants adjoins it.

   Christ the Saviour Cathedral, Taichung

   The Catholic cathedral of Taichung at 100 Sanmin Street, built in the 1950s and the seat of the diocese, with a white front and a bell tower. It serves congregations in Mandarin, Taiwanese, English and Vietnamese.

   921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan

   A museum in Wufeng built over a school destroyed by the earthquake of 21 September 1999, which killed about 2,400 people. The collapsed classrooms and the running track buckled two metres upward by the fault are preserved exactly as they were left.

   Changhua Confucian Temple

   A Confucian temple in Changhua founded in 1726 under the Qing and among the best preserved in Taiwan. Its halls follow the traditional sequence behind the Lingxing gate, and the rites are still performed on Confucius's birthday.

   Yizhong Street

   A pedestrian street in North District between Sanmin Road and Yizhong, grown around the schools that gave it its name, and Taichung's best-known street food area. Fried chicken cutlets and the bubble tea shops that claim to have invented the drink are the reason to walk it.

    Tri-Mountain National Scenic Area

    A national scenic area spanning five counties in central Taiwan, taking in the Bagua plateau, Liyu Lake and Huluodun. The March passage of grey-faced buzzards over Bagua Mountain, tens of thousands of birds in a few days, is what it is watched for.

   A theme park in Houli district whose Gravity Max was the first tilt coaster in the world, tipping its train into a true ninety-degree drop. The Mine Express coaster, a pirate ship and a reversing log flume fill the themed areas around it.

   A museum of modern art at Asia University in Wufeng, opened in 2013 in a triangular concrete building by Ando Tadao — three stacked triangles rotated against each other. It holds Rodin bronzes and contemporary Asian work.

   Taichung Le Cheng Matsu Temple

   A Mazu temple in East District Taichung, founded in the Qing period, whose deity is called the Hanxi Mazu after the river nearby. It is one of the stops on the annual third-lunar-month Mazu pilgrimage.

   Taichung Confucian Temple

   A Confucian temple of 1976 in North District Taichung, built in the Song palace manner in reinforced concrete. The rite for Confucius's birthday on 28 September is performed here with the eight-row ceremonial dance.

   Taichung Martyrs' Shrine

   A martyrs' shrine of 1970 in North District Taichung, built in Chinese palace style to hold the tablets of the Republic's war dead. An honour guard changes daily and the grounds are used for tai chi in the mornings.

   A Mazu temple in Nantun founded in 1726, and the oldest temple standing in Taichung, with Qing-period timber framing surviving. It is a designated historic site.

   Nanyao Temple

   A Mazu temple at Changhua south of Taichung, founded in 1738, whose stone and wood carving makes it one of the principal temples of central Taiwan. It is a third-grade historic building and the departure point of a long-established pilgrimage on foot.

   Taichung Literature Museum

   A literature museum in West District Taichung, opened in 2016 in six restored Japanese-era police residences with their gardens. It holds material on writers from the city and runs readings in the old rooms.

   Taichung Zhang-Liao Temple

   An ancestral shrine of the Zhang and Liao families in Xitun, built in 1904 and protected as a city monument. It shows how Han migrant clans in Taiwan organised their lineage worship, with a hall for tablets and a courtyard for rites.

    Zhenwu Temple

    A Taoist temple in Wuqi district on the coast west of Taichung, dedicated to Xuantian Shangdi, the deity of the north. Founded in the Qing period and rebuilt several times, it keeps carved timber work from earlier phases.
