   Taipei 101

   A 508-metre tower of 2004, the world's tallest for six years, shaped in eight sloping segments after a stalk of bamboo. The 89th-floor observatory is reached in thirty-seven seconds, and the 660-tonne gold damper hanging in the shaft above it is the actual attraction.

   National Palace Museum

   The imperial collection of the Qing court, some 700,000 pieces evacuated ahead of the Japanese advance and then to Taiwan in 1948-49, of which under one per cent is shown at a time. The Jadeite Cabbage and the Meat-Shaped Stone draw the queues; the bronzes and calligraphy are the substance.

   Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall

   A white memorial hall of 1980 to Chiang Kai-shek, its octagonal roof in the blue of the national flag and eighty-nine steps for the years he lived. The hourly changing of the honour guard is the set piece, and the plaza has been a site of democracy protests since 1990.

   Yangmingshan National Park

   A national park on a dormant volcanic field north of Taipei, reached by city bus, with the sulphur fumaroles of Xiaoyoukeng, calla lily fields at Zhuzihu and hot springs below. Datun Mountain silvergrass turns the slopes white in autumn.

   Taipei Grand Mosque

   The largest mosque in Taiwan, opened in 1960 opposite Daan Forest Park and built by an Egyptian-trained architect for Muslims who came with the Nationalist retreat. Friday prayers draw Indonesian and Malaysian workers, and the surrounding streets have halal kitchens.

   Taipei Zoo

   The largest zoo in Asia by area, moved to the Muzha hills in 1986, with giant pandas from Sichuan in the flagship house and a Formosan animal area for native species. The Maokong gondola starts next door and runs up to the tea houses.

   Ximending

   Taipei's first pedestrian zone and still its largest, laid out by the Japanese as an entertainment quarter and now the city's teenage street. The 1908 Red House octagon anchors it; street food runs to fried chicken cutlets and bubble tea until late.

   Bangka Lungshan Temple

   A folk temple of 1738 in Wanhua, rebuilt after bombing in 1945, where Buddhist, Taoist and local deities are worshipped in the same courtyards. Chanting at the waterfall forecourt in the early evening, under the lit roof ridges, is the reason to come after dark.

   National Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall​

   A memorial hall of 1972 to Sun Yat-sen, designed by Wang Da-hong with a sweeping upturned roof, holding a bronze of him and a 2,500-seat theatre. Its plaza frames Taipei 101 head-on and fills with dance and skateboard practice at dusk.

    National Taiwan Museum

    Taiwan's oldest museum, founded in 1908 by the Japanese colonial government and housed since 1915 in a Renaissance-revival hall in 228 Park. Natural history and indigenous cultures are the core; the ticket also covers the former Land Bank across the road.

   228 Peace Memorial Park

   A downtown park holding the memorial to the 28 February 1947 uprising and the killings that followed, opened under this name in 1996 after decades as New Park. Tai chi practice fills it at dawn; the museum inside is small and direct.

   Liberty Square

   A plaza of 240,000 square metres framed by the Chiang Kai-shek hall, the National Theater and the Concert Hall, renamed in 2007 from Democracy Square. The 1990 Wild Lily student sit-in here forced the constitutional reforms that led to direct presidential elections.

   Dalongdong Baoan Temple

   A Taoist temple of 1742 to Baosheng Dadi, the deified physician, whose carving and painting won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific heritage award in 2003 after a ten-year restoration paid for by the temple itself. The Confucius Temple stands across the wall.

   National Revolutionary Martyrs' Shrine

   A shrine of 1969 in Zhongshan district to the Republic's war dead, modelled on the Hall of Supreme Harmony in Beijing. The honour guard changes on the hour with a drill that draws more cameras than the shrine does; the Grand Hotel is up the road.

   Daan Forest Park

   Twenty-six hectares of green in the middle of Daan district, opened in 1994 after the military dependants' village on the site was cleared. Egrets nest at the pond, the outdoor amphitheatre runs free concerts, and the Grand Mosque faces the north-west corner.

   Ciyou Temple

   A folk temple of 1753 to the sea goddess Mazu at the head of Raohe Street, whose night market runs from its gate. The pepper buns baked in a barrel oven by the entrance are what most people queue for before going in.

   Hsing Tian Kong

   A temple of 1967 to Guan Yu that refuses incense, paper offerings and cash donations, which makes it the most austere of Taipei's big temples and among the busiest. Blue-robed volunteers perform shoujing, a rite to settle a frightened spirit, free of charge.

   Taipei Confucian Temple

   A Confucian temple of 1939 in Datong district, built in the southern Fujian manner after the Japanese demolished the original of 1879. It has no statues, only tablets, and the Confucius birthday rite on 28 September is performed with eight-row dance.

   Taipei Fine Arts Museum

   Taiwan's first museum of modern art, opened in 1983 in Zhongshan district, and the venue for the Taiwan Biennial and the national pavilion's home showings. It sits in Expo Park, so it pairs with the Lin An Tai historic house next door.

    Guandu Temple

    A Mazu temple of 1661 on a bluff where the Tamsui and Keelung rivers meet, and one of the oldest on the island. A tunnel bored into the hill behind the main hall leads past twenty-eight Buddha niches to an opening over the river flats.
