St Barthélemy was Swedish for a century, which is why the capital is called Gustavia, and has been French again since 1878. It is small, dry, and among the most expensive islands in the Caribbean.

Superyachts fill the harbour from December. Shell Beach is a short walk from town and Colombier is reached only on foot or by boat. The landing, over a hill and steeply down onto a short runway, is famous among pilots.

    Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, Gustavia

    A nineteenth-century Catholic church at Gustavia on the French Caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy. It was completed in 1829, and its bell tower and forecourt are listed as historic monuments.

    Fort Oscar

    An eighteenth-century fort at 136 feet above the harbour of Gustavia, the capital of Saint Barthélemy. It was built while Sweden held the island and was originally named Gustav Adolf.

    A battery built at Gustavia on Saint Barthélemy in the Caribbean in 1787. What survives of it is listed among the historic monuments of France.

    Clocher suédois de Gustavia

    A wooden bell tower left from the Swedish century, when Sweden held Saint-Barthelemy from 1785 to 1878 and ran Gustavia as a free port. It stands on the hill above the harbour, and its clock still strikes over the town.
