   Louisville Zoo

   A 54-hectare zoo in the Poplar Level district of Louisville, designated the state zoo of Kentucky, holding about 1,200 animals. Its Glacier Run polar bear exhibit and Islands rotation system, in which different species use the same enclosures in turn, are its distinguishing features.

   Kentucky Kingdom

   A 27-hectare theme park beside the Kentucky Exposition Center, opened in 1987, which closed in 2010 and reopened under new owners in 2014. It includes the Hurricane Bay water park and the wooden coaster Lightning Run.

   Cathedral of the Assumption

   The Catholic cathedral of Louisville, built in 1852 and one of the oldest cathedrals in continuous use in the United States, with a spire of eighty-seven metres. Its 1883 hand-blown window over the altar is among the largest of its type in the country.

   Zachary Taylor National Cemetery

   A national cemetery on Brownsboro Road containing the tomb of Zachary Taylor, the twelfth president, in the family burial ground his estate stood on. It is one of very few national cemeteries built around a presidential grave.

   Muhammad Ali Center

   A museum and cultural centre in Louisville devoted to Muhammad Ali, born in this city, founded by Ali and his wife Lonnie in 2005. It presents his boxing career alongside his refusal of the Vietnam draft and his later humanitarian work.

   A steel roller coaster at Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville, opened in 2016 on the track bed of a wooden coaster that had stood derelict for years. The rebuild added three inversions.

   The Louisville Palace

   A theatre of 1928 downtown, built as a Loew's cinema in Spanish Baroque style with a ceiling painted as a night sky and 139 sculpted faces in the lobby — an atmospheric theatre of the type Chicago's John Eberson invented. It is now a concert hall.

   Falls of the Ohio State Park

   Devonian fossil beds laid bare in the bed of the Ohio at Clarksville, opposite Louisville, among the largest exposed coral reef fossils anywhere at around 390 million years old. The interpretive centre above them draws about 160,000 visitors a year.

   Downtown Louisville

   The central business district of Louisville on the Ohio River, and the largest in Kentucky. Its West Main Street holds the largest concentration of nineteenth-century cast-iron facades in the United States after SoHo in New York.

    E. P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park

    Five hundred and fifty acres on the grounds of the old Central State Hospital, opened in 1974 and named for the county judge Erbon Powers Sawyer, killed in a road accident five years earlier. Ball fields, trails and a public pool fill it now.

   Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory

   A museum and working bat factory on Museum Row in downtown Louisville, where Hillerich and Bradsby have made Louisville Slugger bats since 1884. A 37-metre steel bat leans against the building; visitors are given a miniature bat at the end.

   Old Louisville

   A historic district south of downtown Louisville with the largest concentration of Victorian houses of any neighbourhood in the United States — about 1,400 buildings from the 1870s to 1900s. St James Court holds an art show each October.

   The largest art museum in Kentucky, opened in 1927 beside the University of Louisville, with holdings from antiquity to the present. A 2016 expansion doubled its gallery space and added a cinema.

   Thunder Run

   A wooden coaster of 1990 with 2,850 feet of track, standing 90 feet high and running at 53 mph, designed by Curtis Summers for the Dinn Corporation. It stood idle from 2009 until the park reopened in 2014, and now runs under the name Woodland Run.

   Louisville Water Tower

   A water tower of 1860 on the Ohio riverfront, the oldest ornamental water tower in the world, predating Chicago's. Ten classical statues stand around its Corinthian colonnade; a tornado destroyed some in 1890 and they were replaced.

   Frazier History Museum

   A history museum on Museum Row opened in 2004, which holds the only permanent exhibition of the British Royal Armouries collection outside the United Kingdom. Kentucky history, bourbon and the Lewis and Clark expedition are its other subjects.

   Cherokee Park

   A 166-hectare park in eastern Louisville designed by Frederick Law Olmsted in 1891, with a scenic loop road through wooded valleys. A tornado in 1974 destroyed about two-thirds of its trees and the replanting took decades.

   The largest science museum in Kentucky, descended from an 1871 natural history collection, in a downtown warehouse on Museum Row. It has an IMAX theatre and three floors of hands-on exhibits.

    Roller Skater

    A junior steel coaster at Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville, opened in April 1994 with cars shaped like roller skates. It was later renamed and remains a family ride with gentle curves and a low profile.
