   Isoma Rock Shelter Site

   A rock shelter at Tanabe holding a Kofun period burial, where the dead were laid in stone coffins under the overhang along with iron weapons and armour. It has been protected as a national historic site since 1979.

   Misuji temple ruins

   The site of a late Hakuhō-period temple at Shimomisu in Tanabe in Wakayama prefecture. Nothing of the temple stands, but the ground was designated a national historic site in 1935 and the designation was extended in 1985.

   Kirime Ōji Shrine

   The sixty-second of the ninety-nine Oji shrines that marked the pilgrim road to Kumano, and one of the few that keeps its old hall. Pilgrims rested and held poetry gatherings here, and the ancient trees around it are protected.

   Tanabe Castle

   The remains of a castle the Ando family began in 1606 at the river mouth on the orders of the Kishu domain. Its water gate and stretches of stone wall survive beside the harbour, with a garden laid out within them.

   Tanabe City Museum of Art

   A municipal art museum in Shinjo park, opened in November 1996 around the collection of the local businessman Wakimura Reijiro. It holds the Kishu literati painters — Gion Nankai, Kuwayama Gyokushu, Noro Kaiseki — along with modern Japanese oil painting.

   Shirarahama

   A crescent of white sand some 620 metres long at Shirahama, worn so thin by the sea that the town ships in quartz sand from Australia to keep it white. Hot springs rise at the southern end, where an open bath looks straight out over the water.
