   Salt Lake Temple

   The largest Latter-day Saints temple, on Temple Square, built over forty years from 1853 to 1893 in Utah granite hauled thirty-five kilometres by ox team. Only members in good standing may enter; it has been closed since 2019 for seismic work.

   Temple Square

   A four-hectare complex in the centre of Salt Lake City owned by the church, holding the temple, the Tabernacle, the Assembly Hall and two visitor centres. It draws several million people a year, more than any other attraction in Utah.

   Salt Lake Tabernacle

   A domed hall of 1867 on Temple Square, 45 by 76 metres, roofed with a lattice timber arch held together with wooden pegs and rawhide because nails were scarce. Its acoustics are famous — a pin dropped at the pulpit is audible at the back — and the Tabernacle Choir sings here.

   Cathedral of the Madeleine

   The Catholic cathedral of Salt Lake City, completed in 1909 in Romanesque and Gothic Revival, with a painted interior added in the 1910s. It stands a few blocks from Temple Square as the mark of a Catholic community that arrived with the mines and railways.

   Salt Lake Assembly Hall

   A Gothic Revival hall of 1880 in granite at the southwest corner of Temple Square, built for local church meetings and seating about 1,400. Free organ and choir recitals are held in it.

   Bountiful Utah Temple

   A Latter-day Saints temple at Bountiful north of Salt Lake City, announced in 1988 and dedicated in 1995, on a bench of the Wasatch front looking over the valley. Its white marble and single spire are visible from the freeway.

   Church History Museum

   The church history museum opposite Temple Square, holding artefacts of the Latter-day Saint migration west — handcarts, the Nauvoo temple sunstone, pioneer diaries — along with religious art. Admission is free.

   Holy Trinity Cathedral

   A Greek Orthodox cathedral in Salt Lake City built in 1905 by immigrants who came for the mines and railways — Greeks were the largest non-Mormon immigrant group in Utah at the time. Its Greek festival each September is a fixture of the city's calendar.

   Hogle Zoo

   A seventeen-hectare zoo at the mouth of Emigration Canyon, on this site since 1931, holding about eight hundred animals. Its African savanna and Asian highlands sections were rebuilt in the 2010s.

    Seagull Monument

    A monument of 1913 on Temple Square with two gulls on a granite column, commemorating the flocks that ate the crickets destroying the settlers' first crops in 1848. The California gull is Utah's state bird because of it.

   Fort Douglas

   A garrison established as Camp Douglas in October 1862, three miles east of the city, partly to keep watch on the Mormon settlement during the Civil War. Most of it now belongs to the University of Utah; the 1870s officers' row and a museum remain.

   Matthew Stanford Robison Memorial

   A gravestone in Salt Lake City Cemetery designed by Ernest Robison for his son Matthew, who died at eleven, showing the boy rising out of his wheelchair and leaving it behind. It has become one of the most visited graves in the state.

   Endowment House

   A building on Temple Square used from 1855 to administer temple ordinances while the temple itself was under construction, including many plural marriages. It was demolished in 1889 on the church president's order as federal prosecutions closed in.

   Natural History Museum of Utah

   A natural history museum of 2011 built into the Wasatch foothills in copper-clad terraces that step up the slope. Utah's dinosaur fossils — the state has more Jurassic and Cretaceous quarries than almost anywhere — and Great Basin Native cultures are the core.

   Liberty Park

   A 32-hectare park laid out in the 1880s on Brigham Young's farm, the second largest in the city, holding the Tracy Aviary — one of the oldest bird parks in the United States, founded in 1938. Its pond is shaped like the Great Salt Lake and its islands like Utah's mountains.

   The Leonardo

   A science and art museum in the former main library building downtown, built on the premise that the two are one subject. It held a Leonardo notebook facsimile programme and hands-on engineering galleries; its operations have since wound down.

   The state art museum, on the University of Utah campus, holding about twenty thousand works across five thousand years and every inhabited continent. Its Utah and western American collection and the African galleries are the strongest sections.

   Sugar House Park

   A park in the Sugar House district on the site of the Utah State Prison, which stood here until 1951, and at 45 hectares the largest in the city. Its lawns and pond fill for the state's largest fireworks on 4 July.

   Red Butte Garden and Arboretum

   A botanical garden and arboretum run by the University of Utah in the Wasatch foothills, with about a hundred hectares of natural area and eight hectares of developed garden. Its water conservation garden is a demonstration for a desert city, and an outdoor amphitheatre runs a summer concert series.

    B'nai Israel Temple

    A former synagogue at 249 South 400 East, built in 1891 in Byzantine Revival with a copper dome, for Utah's first Reform congregation. The congregation moved out in 1972 and the building was converted to other use; it is on the National Register.
