Sucre is Bolivia's constitutional capital and its handsome one: whitewashed colonial streets, red roofs and a mild climate at 2,800 metres, which makes it far easier to be in than La Paz.

A cement quarry outside town exposed a near-vertical wall carrying over five thousand dinosaur footprints, the largest such collection anywhere. Tarabuco holds a market on Sundays where the weaving is still worn rather than sold.

    Sucre Cathedral

    The cathedral of Sucre, begun in 1559 and finished over two centuries. The chapel beside it holds the Virgin of Guadalupe, an image whose robe was progressively covered in donated gold, emeralds and pearls until it became one of the richest objects in South America.

    Parque Cretácico

    A park built around the quarry face at Cal Orcko, where a cement works laid bare a near-vertical wall carrying more than five thousand dinosaur footprints. The rock was flat mud some 68 million years ago and the rise of the Andes tipped it upright.

    Basílica de San Francisco, Sucre, Bolivia

    A church founded in 1538, among the first in the city, whose tower holds the Bell of Liberty rung to call the rising of 25 May 1809, the first cry of independence in South America. The cracked casting is still on show.
