   Terina

   A Greek city on the hill of Piano di Tirena about twenty kilometres from Lamezia Terme, founded by settlers from Croton. Its silver coins, showing a winged Nike, are among the finest struck anywhere in the Greek world; the site itself is a field with an antiquarium beside it.

   Nicastro Cathedral

   A Catholic cathedral at Nicastro in Lamezia Terme in Calabria in Italy, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. The first church on the site was Byzantine and was destroyed in a Saracen raid before the year 1000.

   A church in the Campora San Giovanni district of Amantea, known to everyone simply as a Mirabella after the quarter it stands in. Dedicated to Saint Anne, it belongs to the parish of St Peter the Apostle.

   Abbazia di Santa Maria di Corazzo

   The ruined Cistercian abbey of Corazzo in the Sila foothills, founded in the 12th century and led for a time by Joachim of Fiore before he withdrew to found his own order. Roofless arcades and the shell of the church stand in a meadow by the river.

   Bastione di Malta

   A watchtower of 1550 near Gizzeria on the Lamezia coast, unusual among the towers of the old Kingdom of Naples for walls several metres thick, built to stand up to gunfire. It is listed as a national monument.

   Castello di Nicastro

   A Norman castle on the hill above Nicastro, enlarged by Frederick II, who is said to have shut his rebellious son Henry inside it in 1232. Earthquakes brought most of it down; the keep and stretches of wall still stand over the town.

   Sant'Eufemia

   The ruins of a Benedictine abbey that Robert Guiscard founded in 1062 and settled with monks from Normandy. The earthquake of 1638 brought it down, and its broken arcades now stand among olive groves near the coast.
