   Ritsurin Garden

   A daimyo strolling garden finished in 1745 for the lords of Takamatsu, with six ponds and thirteen landscaped hills, using Mount Shiun behind it as borrowed scenery. Its Kikugetsutei tea house serves matcha over the water, and the Michelin Green Guide gave it three stars.

   Takamatsu Castle

   A castle begun in 1590 whose moats are filled with seawater from the Inland Sea, making it one of Japan's three great water castles — sea bream swim in them. The keep is gone; the Tsukimi and Ushitora turrets and the Hiunkaku villa of 1917 survive in Tamamo Park.

   Chichu Art Museum

   A museum built into a hillside on Naoshima by Ando Tadao in 2004, almost entirely underground and lit only by daylight. Five Monet water lilies, a James Turrell light room and a Walter De Maria installation are the whole collection; timed tickets are required.

   Teshima Art Museum

   A museum on Teshima holding one work — a white concrete shell with two openings through which rain, wind and light enter, and water seeps continuously from the floor to form droplets. Rei Naito made the piece and Ryue Nishizawa the shell; shoes come off at the door.

   Yashima-ji Temple

   A Shingon temple on the Yashima lava plateau northeast of Takamatsu, temple 84 of the Shikoku pilgrimage, founded by tradition in 754. Its treasure house holds a Heian-period Senju Kannon, and the tanuki statue in the grounds is a local deity of marriage.

   Sanuki Kokubun-ji Temple

   Temple 80 of the Shikoku pilgrimage, which continues the provincial temple founded for Sanuki by imperial decree in the Nara period. The foundation stones of the original eighth-century pagoda are marked out beside the present hall.

   Shikoku Mura

   An open-air museum on the slope below Yashima where more than twenty buildings from across Shikoku have been re-erected, from Edo farmhouses to a Meiji lighthouse keeper's cottage. Four are Important Cultural Properties; the park opened in 1976 across some 50,000 square metres.

   Yakuri-ji Temple

   A Shingon temple on the slope of Mount Goken northeast of Takamatsu, temple 85 of the Shikoku pilgrimage, reached by a cable car up the hillside. Its Kangiten hall is visited by people praying for business success.

   The Kagawa Museum

   The prefectural museum of Kagawa in Takamatsu, covering the province's history and art, with a section on the Setouchi region's salt and sugar industries. It stands next to Tamamo Park and includes a hands-on Japanese culture floor.

    Shido-ji Temple

    Temple 86 of the Shikoku pilgrimage at Sanuki, whose five-storey pagoda and garden are attributed to the Ama diver legend behind the Noh play Ama. Its treasure hall holds Kamakura-period sculpture.

   Yashima

   A lava-plateau peninsula northeast of Takamatsu, the battlefield of 1185 where the Minamoto broke the Taira, an episode retold for centuries in Heike recitation. The summit observation deck opens onto the whole Inland Sea archipelago.

   Lee Ufan Museum

   A museum on Naoshima devoted to Lee Ufan, the Korean artist of the Mono-ha movement, in a partly sunken concrete building by Ando Tadao opened in 2010. Steel plates and stones sit in courtyards between the walls.

   Tamura Shrine

   The first shrine of former Sanuki province, in the Ichinomiya district of Takamatsu, founded by tradition in 709. It is known for an inner sanctuary said to cover a well that must never be looked into, and for the hundreds of statues crowded in its grounds.

   Kandani Shrine

   A shrine at Sakaide in Kagawa whose main hall of 1219 is the oldest dated shrine building in Japan and a National Treasure. It enshrines Kagu-tsuchi, the fire deity, with Okitsuhiko and Okitsuhime.

   Teshima Yokoo House

   A museum on Teshima designed by Yuko Nagayama for the 2013 Setouchi Triennale, made from several old houses at Ieura knocked into one. It shows Tadanori Yokoo's paintings against red glass, mirrors and a rock garden, on the theme of life and death.

   Nagao-ji Temple

   A Tendai temple at Sanuki, temple 87 of the Shikoku pilgrimage, whose gate holds two Kamakura-period stone stupas. Saigyō the poet is said to have stayed here, and its January Fuku-Osame festival involves carrying rice sacks.
