   Tokushima Castle

   The Hachisuka clan's castle, built in 1586 and demolished after the Meiji Restoration. The stone walls, the moat and a fine daimyo garden of the early Edo period survive on the hill, and the museum at the foot holds the clan's material.

   Ōtsuka Museum of Art

   A museum whose entire collection is reproduction: some eleven hundred Western masterpieces copied full size onto ceramic panels, including the Sistine ceiling and the Scrovegni chapel rebuilt as rooms. The panels are meant to last two thousand years and may be touched and photographed.

   Ichinomiya Castle

   A mountain castle above Tokushima begun in 1338, which took its name from the first shrine of the province below it. Cut terraces and stretches of stone wall survive along the ridge, reached by a path up from the shrine.

   A shrine in the city of Tokushima. It was the ichinomiya of the province of Awa, and the camphor tree in its grounds is among the great trees of the region.

   Inbe- Shrine

   The chief shrine of the old province of Awa, dedicated to Ame-no-Hiwashi, ancestor of the Inbe clan who wove the cloth offered at imperial rites. The hemp for the enthronement ceremony was once drawn from these fields.
