Tanegashima is a long low island south of Kyushu with Japan's main launch site on its southeastern coast, set among beaches and sugarcane — often called the most beautiful launch complex in the world.

Launches can be watched from designated viewpoints if the schedule cooperates. The island is also where Portuguese matchlocks entered Japan in 1543, which changed its wars within a generation. The surf on the east coast is the other reason to come.

    Hirota Site

    A cemetery on Tanegashima used from the late Yayoi into the Kofun period, where more than forty thousand shell ornaments were buried with the dead. Some carry incised marks that may be the earliest writing found in Japan; the graves are protected under a shelter.

    Yokomine Site

    A late Palaeolithic site at Minamitane on Tanegashima in Kagoshima prefecture. It was designated a national historic site in 2003, and in 2022 the designation was extended to take in the nearby Tachikiri site.
