   Zuiryū-ji Temple

   Zuiryū-ji is the mortuary temple of Maeda Toshinaga, and the quintessence of Zen planning, with its national treasure gate, Buddha hall and Dharma hall standing on one straight axis. It is the principal national treasure architecture of the Hokuriku region, at Takaoka.

   Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design

   The Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design links art with design, and from the onomatopoeia playground on its roof the peaks of Tateyama are visible. It sits on the same route as the Fugan Canal Kansui Park.

   Museum of Modern Art

   The prefectural museum of modern art, open from 1981 to 2016, which held twentieth-century painting and a very large poster collection. It closed when the collection moved to a new building on the river; the old site is now a park.

   Masuyama Castle

   A Muromachi-period mountain castle at Tonami, and one of the largest in the old Etchu province. Terraces, cut ridges and earth ramparts run along the ridge in an unusually complete state, which is why it is a national historic site.

   Toyama Gokoku Shrine

   A shrine to the war dead of Toyama prefecture, established in 1939. Cherry trees fill the grounds and a memorial to railway workers killed on duty stands among them; the annual memorial services are held here.

   Imizu Shrine

   One of the first-ranked shrines of Etchu province, moved to Takaoka's castle grounds in 1875. Its festival brings out a hikiyama float with a mechanical puppet, and the shrine sits in the park that occupies the old castle site.

   Nisseki-ji Temple

   A Shingon temple at Kamiichi whose principal image is a Fudo Myoo carved directly into a single huge boulder in the Heian period, about three metres high and an Important Cultural Property. Ascetics still stand under the waterfall beside it in summer.

    Keta Shrine

    One of the first-ranked shrines of Etchu, at Fushiki near Takaoka. Its main hall of the Muromachi period is an Important Cultural Property, and the wooded approach up the hillside is quiet enough that most visitors have it to themselves.

   Yasuda Castle

   A Sengoku flatland castle in Toyama, used by Toyotomi Hideyoshi as his headquarters during the Etchu campaign of 1585. The moats and earth banks have been restored to their excavated lines and there is a small museum beside them.

   Kitadai Site

   A Jomon settlement of about 2500 BC in Toyama, where pit dwellings and raised storehouses have been reconstructed on their excavated footings. It is among the most complete middle Jomon village sites on the Sea of Japan coast.

   The city science museum, with a planetarium and galleries built around the natural world of the Tateyama range — its geology, its snow and its weather. It is aimed at schoolchildren and is honest about it.

   A late Asuka-period pottery works at Imizu, where kilns and quantities of sue ware were excavated. It shows this coast was a significant ceramic producer supplying the provincial administration, which is why it is a national historic site.

   The Suiboku Museum, Toyama

   A prefectural museum opened in 1999 for ink painting alone, from the modern Japanese masters of the form to living artists. The building is a low timber pavilion and it is set in its own garden, which is part of the argument the museum is making.
