   Mozia

   A Phoenician island city in the Stagnone lagoon, founded in the eighth century BC and destroyed by Syracuse in 397 BC. A causeway to the mainland still lies just under the water. The marble Motya Charioteer, found here in 1979, is among the finest Greek sculptures anywhere.

   Eryx

   An Elymian city on the mountain above Trapani, famous throughout antiquity for its sanctuary of the goddess the Romans called Venus Erycina. Greek culture reached it early, and Carthage and Rome fought over it in the third century BC.

   Trapani Cathedral

   The cathedral of the diocese of Trapani, formally the cathedral of Saint Lawrence the Martyr. It began as a town church in the Middle Ages and became a cathedral in 1844, and is known for the eighteenth-century baroque front and interior worked by Giovanni Biagio Amico.

   Drepana

   The ancient name of Trapani and of the city that stood on the site. Carthage used it as a base, and Rome ended the First Punic War in the waters off it in 241 BC.

   Madonna of Trapani

   A Marian pilgrimage church at Trapani, founded in the fourteenth century. The marble Virgin inside it is the protector of Sicilian fishermen, and seafarers came to it accordingly.

   Ligny Tower

   A watchtower built in 1671 at the tip of the Trapani peninsula. It was raised against corsairs and now houses the municipal museum of prehistoric and marine finds.

   Mother Church of Erice

   The mother church of Erice, the hilltop town above Trapani. It was built in 1314, and its bell tower is an earlier watchtower taken over for the purpose.

   Scurati Caves

   A group of caves in the coastal cliffs north of Trapani. Houses lived in until the early twentieth century still stand inside the largest of them, the Grotta Mangiapane.

   Grotta del Genovese

   A cave on the island of Levanzo off Trapani. It holds incised figures of deer and cattle from about 10,000 BC together with later painted work, which makes it a key site of prehistoric art in Sicily.

    Castello di Terra

    A medieval castle beside the harbour at Trapani. It was built in the thirteenth century under Aragonese rule and served as a prison from the nineteenth century until 1965.

   The municipal museum of Trapani in a former Carmelite convent. It holds coral carving, silverwork and Sicilian painting — Trapani was the centre of coral craft in the seventeenth century.

   Balio Gardens

   Terraced gardens laid out in the 19th century by Count Agostino Pepoli below the Norman castle, on ground that had held the Saracen governor's quarters, whose title gives them their name. Paths and towers look down some 750 metres to the sea.

   Elymian-Punic Walls

   A stretch of cyclopean wall along the northern side of Erice, laid by the Elymians from the 8th century BC in blocks so large that later ages credited them to giants. Punic builders added the upper courses and the narrow posterns still visible in them.

   Santuario di Maria Santissima di Custonaci

   A Marian pilgrimage church at Custonaci east of Trapani. It holds a painting of the Virgin found in a nearby cave, and the pilgrimage procession is held in the last week of August.

   Casina Nasi

   An Art Nouveau villa of 1898 on the thin spit of land running out from Trapani, between the Ligny tower and the Colombaia castle. Open sea lies on both sides, and the house is used now for events.
