   Kaneda Castle

   A Korean-style mountain fortress built in 667 on Tsushima after the defeat at Baekgang, to watch the strait. Its stone ramparts run for kilometres along the ridge above the sea, and the climb up gives the channel that everything here has always been about.

   Kaneishi Castle

   The residence castle of the So clan at Izuhara, who governed Tsushima and handled all official contact between Japan and Korea for centuries. The gate and the garden have been restored, and Korean envoys were received on this ground on their way to the shogun.

   Watazumi Shrine

   A shrine on the west coast of Tsushima whose five torii stand in a line, the outer two in the tide, so the approach goes under water when it rises. It honours Watatsumi, god of the sea, and is tied to the legend of the palace beneath the waves.

   A group of late Kofun-period burial mounds at Neso in Mitsushima in Tsushima in Nagasaki prefecture, designated a national historic site in 1976.

   Izuhara Hachimangū Shrine

   A shrine above the old castle town of Izuhara, dedicated to Hachiman and long under the patronage of the So lords who ruled Tsushima and handled relations with Korea. Its autumn festival is the largest on the island.

   Banshō-in Temple

   The funerary temple of the So lords who ruled Tsushima for six centuries, reached by a stone stair of 132 steps under old cedars. Their tombs stand in ranks on the slope behind, among the largest daimyo burial grounds in Japan.

   Shimizuyama Castle

   The ruins of a mountain castle above Izuhara, thrown up in 1591 as a staging post for Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea. Three walled enclosures step up the ridge, and enough stonework survives to trace the whole plan.

   Komodahama Shrine

   A shrine on Komoda beach, where the Mongol fleet came ashore in 1274 and the island's deputy governor So Sukekuni died with his eighty men trying to hold the landing. A monument beside it marks the fight.
