   Tottori Castle

   A mountain castle above Tottori, and the site of one of the cruellest sieges in Japanese history: Hideyoshi bought up the region's rice in 1581, then starved the garrison for three months until the commander took his own life to save the survivors.

   Sand Museum

   A museum beside the dunes, opened in 2006, whose exhibits are sand sculptures made each year by an international team on a set theme and then destroyed when the season ends. It is the only indoor museum in the world dedicated to sand sculpture.
