Kume is a quiet island west of Okinawa whose main event lies offshore: Hate-no-hama, a bar of white sand seven kilometres long standing alone in open water, reached by boat.

On the coast, Tatami-ishi is a shelf of basalt cracked into a thousand neat pentagons. The island farms kuruma prawns, dives its own reefs, and has none of the crowds of Miyako or Ishigaki.

    Gushikawa Castle

    A Ryukyuan gusuku on a limestone bluff at the southern end of Kume Island, with the curved dry-stone walls typical of the form. It is on the World Heritage tentative list and the sea drops away directly below its outer wall.

    The remains of a Ryukyuan gusuku on Kume island in Kumejima town in Okinawa prefecture, protected as a national historic site since 2009.

    Hate-no-hama

    A sandbar of some seven kilometres off the east coast of Kumejima, three linked crescents of white sand with no shade and no buildings. Boats run out through the summer, and at high tide most of it goes under.

    Āra Beach

    A beach on the southwest shore of Kume island where fresh water seeps out through the sand, so that shellfish and octopus are unusually plentiful. At spring low tide the sea draws back almost a kilometre and villagers walk out to the reef to gather them.
