   Pitons

   Two volcanic plugs rising straight out of the sea near Soufrière, 743 and 798 metres, and the most photographed silhouette in the Caribbean. They are the cores of old vents whose softer cones eroded away, and have been World Heritage since 2004.

   At 950 metres the highest mountain on Saint Lucia, in the Canaries district on the western side of the island.

   Petit Piton

   The smaller and steeper of the two Pitons at 743 metres, rising almost vertically out of the sea. It is climbable only by experienced scramblers and is normally left alone; from the water it is the more dramatic of the pair.

   Qualibou

   A caldera of three and a half by five kilometres on Saint Lucia, formed between thirty-two and thirty-nine thousand years ago, also called the Soufrière volcanic centre. The two lava domes that predate it, from two to three hundred thousand years ago, are the Pitons.

   Gros Piton

   The larger of St Lucia's two volcanic plugs at 798 metres, and the one that can be climbed — a hard four hours up and down through rainforest with a guide, from Soufrière. The pair are World Heritage and appear on the national flag.

   A football stadium of nine thousand seats at Vieux Fort in Saint Lucia, named after the country's politician George Odlum.

   Bat Cave, Saint Lucia

   A grotto in the cliff coast below Soufriere, used as a marker by the boats that bring snorkellers along this shore. It lies inside the Soufriere marine management area, set up in 1995; despite the name, no great colony of bats is thought to live in it.

   St. Lucia Botanical Gardens

   A garden at Soufrière laid out in 1785 around mineral springs, whose Diamond Waterfall runs yellow, green and purple with the minerals it carries. The stone baths built for the French garrison are still fed by the spring and can be used.

   Anse Chastanet

   A beach at Soufrière on the west coast of Saint Lucia. The town was founded by the French and was once the capital of the island; the district has 7,935 residents.
