Vilanculos faces the Bazaruto archipelago, a chain of sand-dune islands in water clear enough to see the bottom from a dhow, protected as a national park since 1971.

It holds the last substantial dugong population in the western Indian Ocean. Boats sail out to Two Mile Reef for snorkelling and to dunes that rise straight out of the sea. Everything here moves at the speed of the wind.

    Bazaruto National Park

    A marine park proclaimed in May 1971 over five islands and the water between them off Vilanculos. It holds the last viable dugong population in the western Indian Ocean, along with turtles and a reef that the sand islands shelter.

    Manyikeni

    A dry-stone enclosure fifty-two kilometres inland from Vilanculos, built between the twelfth and seventeenth centuries in the same tradition as Great Zimbabwe and without mortar. It is the easternmost such site, and was probably the coastal outpost of that trading system.

    Bazaruto Lighthouse

    A lighthouse of 1913 on the northern point of Bazaruto island, among the oldest on the Mozambican coast. Its light still guides ships through the channel, and the climb gives a view over the dunes and the archipelago.
