Vieques was a US Navy bombing range until 2003, and the odd result is that most of its coast is now a wildlife refuge with beaches that were never built on.

Mosquito Bay is the brightest bioluminescent bay measured anywhere; kayaks go out on moonless nights and the water lights up around the paddle. Wild horses graze along the roads. Ferries and small planes come from the main island.

    Puerto Real

    A barrio on the south coast of Vieques with a population of about sixteen hundred. It sits near the ferry harbour and the road to the beaches that were closed while the navy held the island.

    Puerto Diablo

    A barrio in the north of Vieques with a population of about nineteen hundred, taking its name from the cove on the coast below it. Much of the land around was navy bombing range until 2003.

    Vieques Fort

    A fort built at Isabel Segunda on Vieques in Puerto Rico in 1845, formally the Fortín Conde de Mirasol. The Institute of Puerto Rican Culture restored it in 1991, and it now holds the Vieques museum of art and history and the historical archive.
