   Lake Ōnuma

   A shallow lake of 4.67 square kilometres at Wakkanai in Hokkaido. It lies a little inland from Sōya Bay, draining into the lower Koetoi river, six kilometres east of the town.

   Hokumon Shrine

   A shrine founded in 1785 by the Matsumae trader Murayama Denbee, who set Amaterasu here as guardian of the northern gate. Moved to this hill above Wakkanai in 1896 and burned out by wildfire in 1911, it was rebuilt in 1913 and again in 1978.

   Hyōsetsu no Mon

   A monument of 1963 in Wakkanai Park, a stone gate looking across the strait towards Sakhalin, raised for the Japanese who died there or were driven out at the end of the war. Figures of mourners stand at its base.
