Walvis Bay has a lagoon that holds tens of thousands of flamingos, and behind it the dunes of the Namib run straight into the Atlantic.

At Sandwich Harbour, reachable only by 4WD at the right tide, the sand falls into the surf in a wall a hundred metres high. Dune 7 is climbed for the view and slid down on a board. Kayaks go out among the seals and pelicans.

    Dorob National Park

    A protected stretch of the central Namibian coast around Swakopmund, gazetted in 2010, where fog off the cold current supports lichen fields and beetles that drink from it. Dunes, salt pans and a wreck-strewn shore run north from the town.

    National Marine Aquarium of Namibia

    An aquarium at Swakopmund showing the animals of the Benguela current, the cold upwelling that makes this coast foggy and its fisheries rich. A walk-through tunnel puts rays and kob overhead, and feeding is at three in the afternoon.
