   Gassantoda Castle

   Gassan Toda Castle is a mountain fortress site at Yasugi in Shimane, the seat of the Amago clan and the ground fought over in their long war with the Mōri. It is close to the Adachi Museum of Art, and the climb pairs well with that visit for anyone interested in castles.

   Adachi Museum of Art

   A museum at Yasugi, opened in 1970, whose garden has been placed first in Japan by a specialist journal for over twenty years. It is not walked in but looked at through windows framed as pictures; inside hangs a large Yokoyama Taikan collection.

   Ōgamiyama Shrine

   Ōgamiyama Shrine is the head shrine of the mountain cult of Daisen, and its natural stone approach is among the longest in Japan. It is the pilgrim route that pairs with the climb up Daisen.

   Daisen-ji Temple

   Daisen-ji is an old Tendai temple on the flank of Daisen and the base for climbing in summer and skiing in winter. The mossed stone retaining walls of its approach show the age of a mountain temple.

   Shoji Ueda Museum of Photography

   The Shōji Ueda Museum of Photography honours the master of staged photography who worked in the Tottori dunes. Facing Daisen head on, the building is itself a camera obscura.

   Yonago Castle

   An Edo-period castle on two hills above the town, dismantled in the Meiji years and sold for timber. The stone walls survive, and the climb up gives Daisen on one side and the Sea of Japan on the other — one of the few castle sites in Japan with both mountain and sea in view.

   Nawa Shrine

   A shrine at Daisen to Nawa Nagatoshi, the local warrior who sheltered Emperor Go-Daigo when he escaped exile in 1333. It was rebuilt on a grand scale in the 1930s, when that loyalty was politically useful, and its cherry trees are the local spring outing.

   Miho Shrine

   A shrine at Mihonoseki to Kotoshironushi, the fishing and prosperity deity, whose main hall of 1813 is two Taisha-style sanctuaries built side by side under one roof — a form found only here. Morning and evening rituals with music are performed daily.

   Yonago City Museum of Art

   A municipal gallery opened in 1983, holding work by artists from western Tottori and mounting touring shows. It stands beside the castle hill and the city library, which makes the three a single stop.

   An 800-metre street through Sakaiminato lined with 177 bronze yokai, the spirits drawn by Mizuki Shigeru, who grew up in the town. Shops, benches and street lamps follow the theme, and the trains from Yonago are painted to match.

   Mukibanda Site

   The largest Yayoi settlement site in Japan — some hundred and fifty hectares of hilltop with the traces of nine hundred buildings, found in 1995 when a golf course was being laid out. The golf course was abandoned and the hill preserved instead.

   Kamiyodo Haiji

   The excavated ruins of a Buddhist temple of the late seventh century. Fragments of painted wall plaster and clay sculpture came out of the burnt debris — the earliest Buddhist wall painting found in Japan, older than anything surviving at Nara.

   Fukuichi Site

   A settlement site at Yonago running from the late Yayoi into the middle Kofun period, with pit dwellings and storehouses excavated and reconstructed. It sits on a low terrace with the Daisen volcano in view, which is presumably why it was chosen.
