San Andrés lies seven hundred kilometres off the Colombian coast and far nearer Nicaragua; the shallow reef around it gives the water the banding that locals call the sea of seven colours.

Johnny Cay, a coral islet twenty minutes out by boat, and the Hoyo Soplador blowhole at the southern tip are the fixed points. A scooter circles the island in an afternoon. Trade winds blow all year.
