   Cathedral Basilica of the Virgin of Incarnation

   A Renaissance cathedral begun in 1528 on the site of the main mosque and still unfinished, with one tower complete and the other a stump — the money for it was diverted to the American war of independence. Locals call it La Manquita, the one-armed lady.

   Alcazaba of Málaga

   A palatial fortress of the eleventh century built by the Hammudid rulers of Málaga, and one of the best-preserved alcazabas in Spain, with two rings of walls and Nasrid courtyards inside. A Roman theatre of the first century BC lies exposed at its foot.

   Museo Picasso Málaga

   A museum opened in 2003 in the Buenavista palace in the city where Picasso was born, starting from 285 works his daughter-in-law and grandson gave. Phoenician and Roman remains found during construction are shown in the basement.

   Plaza de toros de la Malagueta

   A bullring in the eastern La Malagueta district, opened in 1876 and built in neo-Mudéjar brick, seating about 9,000. Its main season is the August feria, and a bullfighting museum occupies part of it.

   Museum Jorge Rando

   Malaga's museum of expressionism, opened on 28 May 2015 in a restored convent building north of the old centre. It holds the work of the Malagueno painter Jorge Rando and mounts temporary shows of other expressionist artists.

   Museo de Málaga

   Andalusia's largest museum, formed in 1973 by merging the provincial fine-arts collection of 1913 with the archaeological museum of 1947. Its holdings run to some 2,000 paintings and more than 15,000 antiquities, shown since December 2016 in the neoclassical Aduana customs palace.

   Castle of Gibralfaro

   A Moorish castle on the hill above the Alcazaba, rebuilt in the 14th century by Yusuf I of Granada and joined to the fortress below by a walled corridor. Its garrison held out for three months against the Catholic Monarchs in 1487; the ramparts give the best view over Malaga.

   Al-Andalus Mosque

   A Sunni mosque in the Arroyo del Cuarto district of Málaga, built in the 1980s and among the first mosques constructed in Spain after the return to democracy. Muslim worship had effectively been absent from the city since 1487.

   Carmen Thyssen Museum

   A museum opened in 2011 in a restored sixteenth-century palace, built on the collection Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza assembled of nineteenth-century Andalusian painting. Its costumbrista scenes of bandits, bullfighters and Málaga street life are the strength.

    Castillo Monumento Colomares

    A castle-shaped monument near Benalmádena built between 1987 and 1994 by a local doctor, Esteban Martín, largely with his own hands, to the life of Columbus. It mixes Romanesque, Gothic, Mudéjar and Byzantine elements and contains what is claimed to be the smallest chapel in the world.

   Plaza de la Merced

   A square in the La Merced district where Picasso was born in 1881, in the house on the north side. The obelisk in the middle commemorates General Torrijos and forty-eight liberals shot on the beach in 1831 for opposing Ferdinand VII.

   Jardín Botánico La Concepción

   A landscape garden at the northern entrance to Málaga, begun in the 1850s by the Marquess and Marchioness of Loring, who collected tropical plants and Roman antiquities in equal measure. Its palms, bamboo and wisteria pergola are over a century and a half old.

   Andalusia Technology Park

   A technology park west of Málaga, opened in 1992, which brought telecommunications and software firms and university institutes onto one campus. It shifted the city's economy away from construction and tourism, and now employs over twenty thousand people.

   Cortijo Jurado

   A nineteenth-century farm mansion near Campanillas outside Málaga, abandoned and roofless. Its condition and the stories attached to it have made it locally known as the haunted house; it is fenced and closed.

   Casa natal de Pablo Ruiz Picasso

   The house on Plaza de la Merced where Pablo Picasso was born on 25 October 1881, now a foundation and museum holding early drawings, family photographs and his father's belongings. His father taught drawing at the school across the square.

   Churriana (District 8)

   One of the eleven districts of Málaga, west of the city, once a village of farms and country houses and now holding the airport. Gerald Brenan lived here and is buried in the district's cemetery.

   Plaza de la Constitución (Málaga)

   The old Plaza Mayor at the heart of Malaga, the city's chief public and political space since the 15th century. Calle Larios runs into it, and cafes now fill the square that once held markets, proclamations and executions.

   Cuevas del Tesoro-Higuerón y de la Victoria

   A cave at Rincón de la Victoria east of Málaga, hollowed out by the sea rather than by fresh water — one of only three such marine caves known and the only one in Europe. Palaeolithic paintings were found in it, and the treasure of its name is a legend of hidden Almoravid gold.

   Palacio de la Aduana

   A neoclassical customs house begun in 1788 for the port of Málaga, used for two centuries as a customs office and then a government building. Since 2016 it has held the Museum of Málaga, combining the city's fine arts and archaeological collections — about 17,000 objects.

    Palacio de los Condes de Buenavista

    A sixteenth-century palace in the old town with a Mudéjar timber ceiling and a Renaissance courtyard, built for the counts of Buenavista on the site of a Nasrid house. It is now the main building of the Picasso Museum.
