   Teide

   At 3,715 metres, the highest point in Spain and the third largest volcano on earth measured from its base on the ocean floor. A cable car climbs to 3,555 metres, and going the last 163 metres to the crater needs a free permit booked well ahead.

   Teide National Park

   National park in Tenerife around the volcano Teide, listed as World Heritage in 2007. Its caldera is sixteen kilometres wide and its lava fields have stood in for other planets on film.

   Pyramids of Güímar

   Six terraced stepped structures of lava stone at Güímar, built without mortar and long taken for pre-Hispanic pyramids after a 1990s theory linked them to Atlantic crossings. Documents show they are nineteenth-century field clearance terraces, which the park now explains.

   Loro Parque

   A 13.5-hectare zoo at Puerto de la Cruz opened in 1972 with 150 parrots and now holding the world's largest parrot collection, about 4,000 birds of 350 species. It also keeps orcas, which has drawn sustained criticism.

   Castillo de San Felipe

   A squat fort of black volcanic stone on the seafront at Puerto de la Cruz, thrown up in the 17th century against Barbary and English raiders when the port shipped Canary wine to Europe. Restored in recent decades, it now serves as a hall for concerts and exhibitions.

   Archaeological Museum of Puerto de la Cruz

   A small archaeology museum at Puerto de la Cruz, founded in 1953 by a local society, devoted to the Guanches — the Berber people who lived on Tenerife before the Castilian conquest. Pottery, shell ornaments and burial practices make up the display.

   Lago Martiánez

   A seawater pool complex at Puerto de la Cruz designed by César Manrique and opened in 1977, filling 33,000 square metres of former shoreline. Atlantic water is pumped in, and black volcanic stone, white sculpture and palms are set against the surf.

   Castillo de San Miguel

   A small 16th-century fort on the shore at Garachico, built to guard what was then the busiest port in Tenerife. The eruption of 1706 poured lava through the town and filled the harbour, leaving the castle standing on new black rock.

   Jardín de Aclimatación de la Orotava

   A botanical garden laid out at Puerto de la Cruz in 1788 by order of Charles III, meant to acclimatise plants brought from the tropics before they travelled on to mainland Spain. Two centuries of growth have left a dense canopy of palms, figs and flowering trees.

    All Saints' Church, Puerto de la Cruz

    An Anglican parish church of 1890 at Puerto de la Cruz, built for the British colony that came here for the climate and made this the Canaries' first resort. Its stone and its garden are English; services are still held in English on Sundays.

   Cave of the Guanches

   A lava tube at Icod de los Vinos used by the Guanches to lay out their dead, so that a volcanic tunnel became a tomb. Human remains and grave goods found in it make the site one of the clearest records of pre-conquest burial on the island.

   Parque del Drago

   A park at Icod de los Vinos built around the Drago Milenario, a dragon tree between three hundred and a thousand years old depending on who is counting, and the emblem of the Canaries. A path below it shows the island's endemic plants.

   Casa de los Balcones

   A house of 1632 in La Orotava whose carved pine balconies run around an inner courtyard, in the Canarian style that combined Spanish and Portuguese carpentry. It shows local embroidery and lace, and the workshop upstairs still takes commissions.

   Casa Fuerte

   The fortified seat of the lords of Adeje, built in the sixteenth century when this coast made money from sugar and Guinea trade. Fire gutted it in 1902, leaving the tower and outer walls; the Barranco del Infierno gorge walk starts beside it.

   Museo Guanche

   An ethnographic museum at Icod de los Vinos on the Guanches, whose Berber ancestors reached the islands around 1000 BC and lived in caves and stone huts until the 1490s. Reconstructed dwellings, tools and mummification are the core of it.

   Church of Santa Ana (Garachico)

   The parish church of Garachico, rebuilt after the eruption of 1706 buried most of the town and its harbour under lava. The images and silver rescued before the flow reached the square are inside, and the lava rock pools are five minutes away.

   Sanctuary of the Santo Hermano Pedro

   A pilgrimage church at Vilaflor, at 1,400 metres the highest village in Spain, honouring Pedro de San José Betancur, who was born here and cared for the sick in Guatemala. He was canonised in 2002, the first Canarian saint; the road to Teide runs past.

   Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel

   A shrine to Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Los Realejos, on a slope above the Orotava valley. The village's summer processions start from it; Los Realejos holds more fiestas per year than anywhere else in Spain.

   Mother Parish of the Apostle Santiago

   The parish church of Los Realejos, founded in 1496 on the spot where the Castilian conquest of Tenerife ended with the surrender of the Guanche kings, and among the oldest on the island. Its Mudéjar coffered ceiling survives.
