   La Concha Beach

   A crescent of sand 1,350 metres long in the middle of San Sebastián, closed off by Santa Clara island so that the water inside stays flat. The white iron railings and clock of the promenade date from 1910; the bay's shape gives it the name, shell.

   Abbadia Castle

   A neo-Gothic château at Hendaye built between 1864 and 1879 for the explorer Antoine d'Abbadie by Viollet-le-Duc and Edmond Duthoit, after his years mapping Ethiopia. His observatory, library and Ethiopian collections are still in place, and he left it to the Academy of Sciences.

   Good Shepherd Cathedral of San Sebastián

   The cathedral of San Sebastián, finished in 1897 in Gothic Revival with a spire of seventy-five metres — the tallest building in Gipuzkoa. Sandstone from Mount Igueldo was used, and it stands at the end of the axis running from the bay.

   Peine del Viento XV

   Three steel forms weighing ten tonnes each, set by Eduardo Chillida into the rock at the western end of the bay in 1977, where Ondarreta beach ends. Holes drilled under the terrace turn the swell into spouts of water and sound at high tide.

   Plaza de Toros de Illumbe

   An arena of 1998 in San Sebastián seating about eleven thousand, built as a bullring but used mostly for basketball as the home of the city's team. Bullfights run only during the August Semana Grande.

   Miramar Palace

   A palace of 1893 on the slope above La Concha, built for Queen María Cristina to a design by the English architect Selden Wornum in an Anglo-Norman style. The royal summers here made San Sebastián a resort; the city bought it in 1971 and the gardens are public.

   Basilica of Saint Mary of the Chorus

   A baroque parish church of 1774 in the old town at the foot of Mount Urgull, whose deep carved portal is the most theatrical in the Basque Country. It closes the view down Calle Mayor, with the cathedral aligned at the far end.

   Ondarreta Beach

   A city beach on the bay of La Concha in San Sebastián — the westernmost and shortest of the city's beaches. Because the tide affects it less, it is broad enough that its 60,000 square metres actually exceed La Concha beach in area.

   San Telmo Museoa

   A museum of Basque society in a former Dominican convent at the foot of Urgull, with a glass and stone extension of 2011 built into the hillside. Its collection runs from ethnography to Basque art, and the courtyard holds Sert's 1930s canvases.

    Zurriola beach

    One of the three beaches of San Sebastián, Spain. It runs some 800 metres between the mouth of the Urumea and Mount Ulía, and was reshaped by works in 1994.

   Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste (Saint-Jean-de-Luz)

   The church at Saint-Jean-de-Luz where Louis XIV married the Spanish infanta Maria Theresa in June 1660, sealing the Treaty of the Pyrenees. The door they left by was walled up afterwards and has never been reopened; three tiers of oak galleries line the nave.

   Montaña Suiza

   A steel scenic railway at the Monte Igueldo amusement park, designed by the German engineer Erich Heidrich and opened in 1928 — the oldest steel roller coaster still running anywhere. Its cars run along the cliff edge with the Bay of Biscay below.

   Petit train de la Rhune

   A metre-gauge rack railway climbing La Rhune on the French side of the border, running since 1924 with its original wooden carriages at eight kilometres an hour. From the 905-metre summit the Atlantic, the Pyrenees and Spain are all in view.

   Funicular de Igueldo

   A funicular of 1912 running 312 metres of track up Mount Igueldo from the end of Ondarreta beach, with two cars on a single track. It serves the amusement park at the top, and the view back over La Concha from the carriage is the reason to ride it.

   Albaola Itsas Kultur Faktoria

   A working shipyard museum in Pasaia where a full-size replica of the San Juan — a Basque whaler that sank at Red Bay in Labrador in 1565 — is being built in the open with 16th-century tools and timber. UNESCO placed the project under its protection in 2015.

   Oiasso

   A Roman town of the Vascones on the left bank of the Bidasoa estuary, and the northernmost port of Roman Hispania, mentioned by Pliny and Ptolemy. Harbour works, baths and a necropolis have been excavated in the old town of Irun, with a museum on the site.

   A park of 14,500 square metres in the Ulía district at the start of the Ulia walk, on the ground of the municipal nursery that supplied the city's flowerbeds through the twentieth century. Glasshouses and terraces survive from that use.

   A coastal botanical garden of 2.5 hectares at Saint-Jean-de-Luz, planted with the native flora of the Basque shore and the dune systems. It shows how the species here survive salt and wind, on the cliff where they actually grow.

    Saint-Martin (Ahetze)

    The parish church of Ahetze in the Basque country, dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours and listed as a historic monument on 5 June 1973. Its tiers of wooden galleries are typical of Labourd churches, where the men sat above the nave and the women below.
