   Sky Tower

   At 328 metres to the mast tip, the tower was the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere from its completion in 1997 until 2022. Built as part of the SkyCity casino complex, its observation decks and glass floor panels draw over 400,000 visitors a year.

   Auckland Art Gallery

   New Zealand's largest art collection, in a French Renaissance building of 1888 next to Albert Park. Its heart is the nineteenth-century Māori portraits by Lindauer and Goldie; a 2011 extension roofed the galleries in kauri.

   Auckland War Memorial Museum Tāmaki Paenga Hira

   A neoclassical museum of 1929 on the crater rim of Pukekawa, built as the city's First World War memorial. Its Maori and Pacific collections are among the finest anywhere, including the carved meeting house Hotunui of 1878 and a war canoe twenty-five metres long.

   Auckland Zoo

   A zoo of sixteen hectares at Western Springs, opened in 1922, whose native precinct is one of the few places to see kiwi, tuatara and kea without going into the bush. The kiwi house is kept dark, since the birds are nocturnal.

   St Patrick's Cathedral

   The Catholic mother church of Auckland, on land the country's first bishop bought in 1841, with the present Gothic Revival building finished in the 1880s. It stands hemmed in by office towers in the middle of the city.

   Kelly Tarlton's Sea Life Aquarium

   An aquarium opened in 1985 inside disused sewage tanks by a diver who died a few weeks later. It was the first anywhere to use a curved acrylic tunnel that visitors ride through on a moving walkway; the penguin enclosure is kept at Antarctic temperatures.

   Auckland Domain

   Seventy-five hectares in the crater and tuff ring of an extinct volcano, and the oldest park in Auckland. The museum stands on the rim, the Wintergardens with their Victorian glasshouses sit in the hollow, and the cricket has been played on the flat since the 1860s.

   Holy Trinity Cathedral

   The Anglican cathedral in Parnell, whose modern nave was consecrated in 1973 and joined in 1982 to the wooden Gothic church of St Mary's — the older building was jacked up and rolled across the road on rails, which Aucklanders came out to watch.

   Museum of Transport and Technology

   A museum of transport and technology at Western Springs, where much of the collection still works — heritage trams run from it to the zoo, and the aviation hall holds a Solent flying boat.

    Aotea Square

    The city's main civic square, opened in 1979 off Queen Street and remodelled in 2010. It takes the markets, the festivals and the protests, with the town hall on one side and the art gallery a block away.

   Maungawhau / Mount Eden

   At a hundred and ninety-six metres the highest of the volcanoes on the isthmus, with a crater fifty metres deep in a lawn of grass. The summit road was closed to cars in 2011 to protect it, so the view over both harbours now costs a twenty-minute walk and nothing else.

   Cornwall Park

   A park given to the city in 1901 by a merchant who had arrived in 1840, running to two hundred and seventy hectares with the neighbouring domain. Sheep and cattle still graze it, below the volcanic cone of Maungakiekie.

   Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple New Zealand

   A Chinese Buddhist temple and community centre at East Tamaki, built over seven years in Tang dynasty style with a hall of a thousand Buddhas. It runs vegetarian meals and classes open to anyone.

   Albert Park

   A Victorian park on the site of the Albert Barracks, laid out in the 1880s around a fountain and planted with trees that are now among the oldest in the city. It sits between the university and the art gallery.

   St Mary's Cathedral Church

   A wooden Gothic church in Parnell designed by Benjamin Mountfort and finished in 1897, the Anglican cathedral until 1973. In 1982 the whole building was jacked up and moved across Parnell Road to stand beside its replacement.

   New Zealand Maritime Museum Hui Te Ananui a Tangaroa

   A museum on Hobson Wharf covering the voyaging that reached these islands — Polynesian double-hulled waka, the immigrant ships, and the America's Cup boats KZ1 and NZL32, one of which is sailed on the harbour with visitors aboard.

    Victoria Park

    A park and sports ground at Freemans Bay in central Auckland, opened in 1905 on reclaimed land and named for Queen Victoria, who had died four years earlier. Sports fields, a market building and the motorway tunnel beneath now share the site.
