   Oreti Beach

   A straight beach of twenty-six kilometres on the Foveaux Strait, wide and hard enough to drive on. Burt Munro tuned his Indian motorcycle here before setting the land speed records that the film about him made famous.

   St. Mary's Basilica

   Francis Petre's domed church of 1905, rising 37 metres above Tyne Street and long called the prettiest church in Australasia. Basilica here describes the architecture rather than any papal rank; Heritage New Zealand lists it as a Category 1 building.

   Queen's Park, Invercargill

   A park of eighty hectares set aside when Invercargill was laid out in 1856, immediately north of the centre. It holds an aviary, a rose garden and a herd of deer, and is the reason the town feels greener than it is.

   Southland Museum and Art Gallery

   The main museum of Southland, in Gala Street under a pyramid added over the 1942 building in 1990. It is known for its long-running tuatara colony — the reptile survives only in New Zealand and lives well past a century — and for its Subantarctic islands gallery.

   Classic Motorcycle Mecca

   More than 325 machines on three floors, most of them British and American with German, Italian and Japanese models among them, making the largest motorcycle collection on public display in New Zealand. It is run as a tourism venture by the Transport World group.
