   Lake Wakatipu

   A glacial lake eighty kilometres long, bent twice into a rough Z, and three hundred and eighty metres deep. The water rises and falls about ten centimetres every twenty-five minutes, a standing wave the Maori explain as the heartbeat of the giant Matau, asleep under the lake.

   Cecil Peak

   A peak of 1,978 metres on the south side of Lake Wakatipu, the mountain that fills the view from the Queenstown waterfront. There is no public road to it; it belongs to a station that is reached by boat or aircraft.

   Humboldt Falls

   A waterfall in the Hollyford valley dropping two hundred and seventy-five metres in three stages, the largest of them a hundred and thirty-four. A short walk from the road end reaches the viewpoint, and the road there is unsealed and often wet.

   A lake beside the road to Milford Sound in Fiordland, with a short nature walk through red beech forest along its shore. It is a common stop for birdsong and for the reflection when the water is still.

   Coronet Peak

   A ski field on the southern slopes of a 1,649-metre peak near Queenstown, and the first commercial field in New Zealand when it opened in 1947. It runs night skiing, which is rare in the country.

   A mountain of 2,819 metres at the head of Lake Wakatipu, in Mount Aspiring National Park above Glenorchy. It carries permanent snow and is the peak that closes the view up the lake from Queenstown.

   Roys Peak

   A ridge of 1,578 metres above Lake Wanaka whose halfway ledge has become one of the most photographed spots in New Zealand. It is a five- to six-hour return walk with no shade, and the track closes for lambing in October and November.

   Te-taumata-o-Hakitekura

   A peak of 1,748 metres directly above Queenstown, and the standard hard day walk from the town — four to six hours return, or less from the top of the gondola. It was named after the Scottish Ben Lomond by an early shepherd.

   Cardrona Alpine Resort

   A ski resort between Wanaka and Queenstown, its runs spread between 1,260 and 1,860 metres on a broad open basin. Its terrain parks and halfpipe are the best in the southern hemisphere and are used by Olympic teams for winter training.
