   Boulder Bank

   A natural breakwater of granite boulders running thirteen kilometres across the entrance to Nelson haven, formed by rock falling from a headland and carried along by the current. Formations like it are very rare; a lighthouse stands at its end.

   Christ Church Cathedral

   The Anglican cathedral of Nelson, on a rise at the head of Trafalgar Street and built in local marble. Work stretched over decades and the design changed as it went; the finished church seats about three hundred and fifty.

   World of Wearable Art

   A design competition begun in Nelson in 1987 as a one-off publicity idea for a rural gallery, which grew into an international event now staged in Wellington. Nelson kept a museum of the winning garments, shown alongside a collection of classic cars.

   St Michael's Church

   The parish here has held services without a break since 1843, longer than any other in New Zealand, and the first church building in the Nelson province stood on this ground. The present Anglican church is registered as a Category 1 historic place.
