   Drottningholm Palace

   The royal family's actual home, on an island west of the city, and World Heritage since 1991. Its court theatre of 1766 survives with the original hand-cranked machinery for waves, thunder and flying gods, and is still used for summer opera; the Chinese Pavilion in the park was a birthday surprise for a queen in 1753.

   Stockholm Palace

   Built from 1697 after the old castle burned, with over six hundred rooms, and used for state occasions rather than lived in. The guard is changed in the outer courtyard daily, mounted in summer, and five separate museums sit inside the same walls.

   Vasa Museum

   Museum in Stockholm built around a warship that sank in 1628 after thirteen hundred metres of her maiden voyage. She was raised almost whole in 1961 and is 98 per cent original timber.

   Skansen

   Opened in 1891 and the first open-air museum in the world — the model that Scandinavia, and then everyone else, copied. About a hundred and fifty buildings were dismantled and brought here from all over Sweden, staffed by people doing the work they were built for.

   Nationalmuseum

   The national gallery, in an 1866 palace on the water, reopened in 2018 after a rebuild that repainted the walls in nineteenth-century colours. Rembrandt, Watteau and Chardin hang alongside the Swedish eighteenth century, which is the part you cannot see elsewhere.

   Nobel Prize Museum

   A museum in the old stock exchange of 1778 on the main square of the old town — the same building in which the Swedish Academy meets and chooses the Nobel prize for literature. The café chairs are signed underneath by laureates who have sat in them.

   Ytterby mine

   A disused feldspar quarry on an island in the archipelago, and the source of eight chemical elements — more than any other single place on earth. Yttrium, ytterbium, terbium and erbium all take their names from this village of a few hundred people.

   Storkyrkan

   The oldest church in Stockholm, thirteenth century behind a baroque exterior, and the cathedral in all but constitutional fact — Swedish royal weddings happen in it. Its oak St George and the Dragon of 1489 is carved with real elk antlers on the dragon.

   Nordic Museum

   A museum of Swedish daily life since the sixteenth century, in a building of 1907 with a hall the size of a cathedral. Its Sami collection is the most important anywhere, and its founder Artur Hazelius also created Skansen up the hill.

    Swedish Museum of Natural History

    Founded in 1819 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences around collections it had gathered since 1739 and opened to the public as early as 1786. Its halls hold some ten million specimens, and Sweden's only Imax dome, the Cosmonova, sits alongside.

   Tre Kronor Castle

   The medieval castle that stood where the Royal Palace is now, grown from a thirteenth-century fortress into a royal residence with a spire carrying three gilded crowns. It burned to the ground on 7 May 1697, which is why the present palace is baroque.

   Gröna Lund

   Sweden's oldest amusement park, opened in 1883 on Djurgarden and squeezed onto less than four hectares, so the rides thread through and over each other. It doubles as a concert ground: the summer bill has taken most touring acts that come to Stockholm.

   Haga Palace

   A small Gustavian palace of 1805 in the Haga park, built as a queen's pavilion and now the home of the crown princess and her family. It is closed to visitors; the park around it is not.

   Stortorget

   The oldest square in Stockholm, and the site of the Bloodbath of November 1520, when Christian II had some eighty nobles beheaded here — the act that set off the revolt which broke the Kalmar Union. The Nobel Prize Museum occupies the old exchange on one side.

   Riddarholm Church

   A Franciscan church of about 1300 on its own islet, and the burial place of Swedish monarchs from Gustavus Adolphus until 1950. The cast-iron spire and the coats of arms of the Order of the Seraphim, hung on the walls when each knight dies, give it its character.

   ABBA: The Museum

   A museum on Djurgården, opened in 2013, about the four Swedes who became the country's largest cultural export. It is unashamedly interactive — you can sing with holograms of them — and the costumes and the original Polar Studios mixing desk are the substance.

   A museum of military history at Östermalm in Stockholm. It reopened in 2002 after a long closure and was named best museum in Stockholm in 2005.

   Rosendal Palace

   A summer palace built between 1823 and 1827 on Djurgården in Stockholm. Fredrik Blom, the leading architect of the day, designed it for Charles XIV John, the first king of the Bernadotte dynasty.

   Moderna Museet

   The state museum of modern art, opened in 1958 on Skeppsholmen, which bought aggressively and early — Picasso, Duchamp, Matisse. Rauschenberg's goat in a tyre, Monogram, is its emblem, and the terrace café looks across the water at the palace.

    Royal Armoury

    The oldest museum in Sweden, founded in 1628 when Gustavus Adolphus ordered his campaign clothing preserved for posterity. That included what he was wearing when he was killed at Lützen in 1632, still bloodstained, and his horse Streiff, stuffed and standing.
