   Liseberg

   An amusement park of 1923, the second most visited in Scandinavia with about three million people a year. Balder, its wooden coaster, is regularly voted among the best in the world, and the park's Christmas market is a Gothenburg institution.

   Gothenburg Museum of Art

   The city art museum, whose Fürstenberg Gallery holds the Nordic painting of the 1880s and 90s — Zorn, Larsson, Krøyer, Hammershøi — bought by a Gothenburg merchant couple while the artists were still young.

   Gothenburg Cathedral

   The cathedral of 1815, the third church on the site, the first two having burned. It is neoclassical, plain and rather severe, which suits a city built on trade and Lutheranism in equal parts.

   Bohus Fortress

   A fortress twenty kilometres north of the city on a rock where the Göta river splits, built by Norway in 1308 to hold the border. It was besieged fourteen times and never taken; the Swedes got it by treaty in 1658.

   Museum of World Culture

   A national museum opened in 2004 that took over the old ethnographic collections and set out to do something else with them — exhibitions about migration, trafficking and colonialism rather than displays of objects by region.

   Gothenburg Botanical Garden

   One of the largest botanical gardens in Europe at a hundred and seventy-five hectares, most of it left as natural woodland and rock. Its greenhouse orchid collection is the most important in Sweden and entry to the garden is by voluntary donation.

   New Elfsborg Fortress

   A sea fort on a small island in the river mouth, begun in 1653 to keep the Danish fleet out of Gothenburg. It saw action only once, in the Great Northern War, and boats run out to it in summer.

   Gothenburg Synagogue

   A synagogue of 1855 in Romanesque revival near the central station, seating three hundred, and still in use by a Conservative congregation. Gothenburg's Jewish community was formed by merchants admitted in the 1780s.

   Götaplatsen

   The square at the top of the main avenue, laid out for the tercentenary exhibition of 1923 and closed by the concert hall, the art museum and the theatre. Carl Milles's bronze Poseidon stands in the middle of it and caused a scandal about anatomy.

    Oscar Fredrik Church

    A neo-Gothic church of 1893 by Helgo Zettervall in the Olivedal district, with a tall spire visible across the southern suburbs. It is one of the largest churches in Gothenburg and its acoustics make it a concert venue.

   Balder

   A wooden roller coaster at Liseberg in Gothenburg in Sweden. It was an immediate success when it opened in 2003, and its prefabricated laminated track makes it very different from a traditional wooden coaster.

   Volvo Museum

   A museum and visitor centre opened in 2024 by the two Volvo companies, replacing the older museum that closed in 2023. It covers cars, trucks and engines, and argues that safety — the three-point belt, given away free in 1959 — is the company's real contribution.

   Feskekörka

   A covered fish market of 1874 whose gabled shape led the city to call it the fish church. It has been the place to eat shellfish in Gothenburg for a century and a half and was reopened after a long refit.

   AtmosFear

   A drop tower 116 metres high at Liseberg in Gothenburg in Sweden. Intamin designed it, the drop begins at a hundred metres, and it is the second tallest in Europe.

   Helix

   A steel roller coaster at Liseberg in Gothenburg in Sweden. Mack Rides built it, with two linear synchronous motor launches, a top speed of 100 km/h and a double launched helix forty-one metres high.

   A park of 137 hectares in the middle of Gothenburg in Sweden. Its name means the castle wood.

   Crown Redoubt

   A redoubt of 1698 on a hill in the Haga district, armed with twenty-three cannon against a Danish attack from the south that never came — so it has never fired a shot in anger. Its walls are five metres thick and the view is the reward for the climb.

   Kungahälla

   A medieval town in southern Bohuslän, at what is now Kungälv, which was one of the three most important towns in Norway and where the three Scandinavian kings met in 1101 to make peace. Only the fortress mound on the river island survives.

    A science centre of 2001 in a building by Gert Wingårdh, holding a rainforest hall under glass with free-flying birds, an aquarium and a shark tunnel. It is the most visited science centre in Scandinavia.
