   Kiruna Church

   One of the largest wooden buildings in Sweden, built 1909-12 by the mining company in a form drawn from a Sami lavvu. The whole church is being moved five kilometres east on trailers, along with the rest of the town, because the mine has undermined the ground beneath it.

   Sami Parliament of Sweden

   The representative body of the Swedish Sami, seated in Kiruna since 1993 — simultaneously an elected parliament and a state agency, a double role that Sami politics has never been comfortable with. Its assembly meets in a hall shaped as a lavvu.

   Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi

   An ice hotel in the village of Jukkasjärvi, seventeen kilometres from Kiruna in northern Sweden. It opened in 1990 as the first ice hotel in the world and is rebuilt from snow and ice each year between December and April.

    Njuotjan Lake

    A long narrow lake of about two square kilometres beside the iron ore railway and the E10 in Lapland, with the Njuotjan fell rising across the tracks. Its water runs by way of the Rautas into the Torne and on to the Gulf of Bothnia.
