   Turning Torso

   Santiago Calatrava's residential tower of 2005, a hundred and ninety metres of nine cubes twisting ninety degrees from bottom to top, built on the site of a demolished shipyard. It was the tallest building in the Nordic countries until 2022.

   Lund Cathedral

   A Romanesque cathedral consecrated in 1145, when Lund was the archbishopric for all of Scandinavia. Its astronomical clock of about 1425 plays at noon and three, and the crypt holds a carved figure the legend calls the giant Finn, gripping a pillar.

   Malmö Castle

   A castle begun in 1526 and the oldest surviving Renaissance castle in the Nordic region. The Earl of Bothwell, third husband of Mary Queen of Scots, was imprisoned in it for five years from 1568; it now holds the city's museums.

   Saint Peter's Church, Malmo

   Brick Gothic church in Malmö, begun around 1319 on the model of Lübeck. Its side chapel kept its late medieval wall paintings because it had been used as a store room.

   Malmö Synagogue

   A synagogue of 1903 in art nouveau and Moorish revival, and one of very few of that style left in Europe — most were destroyed in 1938. Malmö's Jewish community has faced repeated harassment in recent decades and the building is guarded.

   Malmö Mosque

   The second oldest mosque in Sweden, opened in 1984 in the Husie district and run by an Islamic centre. It has been attacked by arson more than once, and it serves a Muslim population that is now a substantial part of the city.

   An art museum founded in 1841 in the castle complex, strong on Nordic painting of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and on Russian art of the early 1900s, which a Malmö collector bought when nobody else wanted it.

   Malmö Konsthall

   An exhibition hall of 1975 by Klas Anshelm, one of the largest single-space contemporary galleries in Europe — a column-free hall lit entirely by five hundred and fifty roof lanterns, so that shows are hung in daylight.

   Borgeby Castle

   A castle on the largest river in Scania, whose medieval tower is the oldest part. The painter and the poet who owned it around 1900 turned it into a gathering place for Swedish artists, and its gardens are open in summer.

   An open-air and cultural history museum spread over two blocks in the centre of Lund in Sweden. After Skansen in Stockholm it is the second oldest open-air museum in the world, with buildings from the Middle Ages to the 1930s standing among gardens and cobbled paths.

   A Renaissance castle east of Malmö, built in 1537 by a noblewoman for her son and given its present form in the early seventeenth century. It stands in a beech wood that is now a public nature reserve.

   A district in the middle of Malmö in Sweden. It consists of the medieval town and the new quarter laid out in the early nineteenth century; the western half is well preserved, while much of the eastern was cleared in the 1960s.

   A branch of Stockholm's modern art museum, opened in 2009 in a power station of 1901 that had been an art space before, with an orange perforated box added on top. It programmes independently of the parent museum.
