Antalya is the capital of the Turkish Riviera, built above cliffs where the Düden river drops straight into the sea. Kaleiçi, the walled old town, keeps Ottoman houses and Hadrian's Gate, raised in AD 130.

Perge and Side are Roman cities within an hour, and the theatre at Aspendos, from the second century, is the best-preserved in the Mediterranean. April to June and September to October avoid the worst heat.

Perge
A Pamphylian city of Hellenistic and Roman date east of Antalya, whose colonnaded main street ran for three hundred metres with a water channel down the middle. The stadium held twelve thousand. Paul preached in its synagogue on his first journey and the theatre still stands across the road.

Antalya Mosque
A historic mosque in the old town of Kaleici, near Kalekapisi square off Cumhuriyet Street. Its fluted brick minaret, still holding traces of blue tile, has become the emblem of the city and stands over the harbour approach.

Hadrian's Gate
A three-arched marble gate built for Hadrian's visit in AD 130, and the only gate of the Roman wall still standing. It was walled up for centuries, which is why it survived; the ancient wheel ruts are still cut into the paving under the arches.

Antalya Museum
Thirteen halls holding what came out of Perge — Roman copies of Greek originals in unusual quantity, among them the Dancer and the Weary Herakles, whose upper half was returned from Boston in 2011 after a thirty-year dispute.

Hidirlik Tower
A tawny stone tower at the point where Kaleici meets Karaalioglu Park, and one of Antalya's defining buildings. Roman in origin and probably a tomb, it later served as a lighthouse and a lookout over the old harbour; sunset draws a crowd to the terrace beside it.

Tekeli Mehmet Paşa Mosque
An Ottoman mosque in the old town of Kaleici, built in the seventeenth century and set among the narrow lanes with a walled yard of old tombstones beside it. Its stone minaret and tiled porch survive from the original work.

Konyaaltı Beach
One of Antalya's two main beaches, with Lara at the other end of the city. It runs thirteen kilometres west below the Beydaglari mountains, mostly fine shingle with some sand, and the water shelves quickly into deep blue.

Kesik Minare
The Broken Minaret Mosque in Kaleici, built as a Roman temple in the second century, converted into a Byzantine church dedicated to the Virgin in the seventh, and given a minaret when the Sultanate of Rum took the city in the early thirteenth. Fire brought the minaret down in 1896 and it has stood truncated since.

Karaalioğlu Park
A large park in central Antalya, immediately south of Kaleici, running along the clifftop above the old Roman harbour. Hidirlik Tower stands at one end, and the whole sweep of the Gulf of Antalya opens out from the railings.

Arapsu Bridge
A small stone footbridge in the Arapsuyu district, 5 to 6 km west of the centre, at the foot of a mound identified with the Greek colony of Olbia. A modern weir 100 m downstream has half-drowned it, leaving scholars split over whether the slightly pointed arch is Roman or later.
