   Hagia Sophia, Trabzon

   A Greek Orthodox church of the thirteenth century, built when Trabzon was the capital of a small empire of its own after the fall of Constantinople. Its exterior frieze carves the Book of Genesis in stone; it became a mosque in 1461, a museum in 1964, and a mosque again in 2013.

   Fatih Mosque, Trabzon

   A mosque in the Ortahisar district of Trabzon, originally the Byzantine church of Panagia Chrysokephalos of the tenth or eleventh century. It served as the cathedral of the Trebizond see and as a monastery church.

   Yeni Cuma Mosque

   A mosque built as the church of Hagios Eugenios, dedicated to the patron saint of the city in the Byzantine period. Like the other churches it was converted into a mosque after Mehmed the Conqueror took Trabzon in 1461.

   Saint Anne Church, Trabzon

   Reckoned the oldest church in Trabzon, going back to the sixth or seventh century. It stood unused for more than a century until a thorough restoration in 2021-22; stripping the whitewash brought the surviving frescoes back to light.

   Kaymaklı Monastery

   The remains of an Armenian Apostolic monastery outside Trabzon, its name meaning the monastery of the All-Saviour. Until the Armenian genocide of 1915 it was the centre of the Trebizond diocese under the patriarchate of Constantinople, and consisted of a church, a bell tower and a small chapel.

   The line of defensive walls ringing the old town of Trabzon. It is called Trabzon Castle, though it worked as a city wall rather than a castle.

   Saint Gregory of Nyssa Church, Trabzon

   A church and monastery that stood at Trabzon. It is thought to have been built between 1280 and 1297 by the wife of John III, emperor of Trebizond, and from 1665 it served as the cathedral of the city.

   Kalepark

   A medieval fortress on a rocky spur east of Trabzon, originally called Leontokastron. Genoese merchants bought it and strengthened it; it stands between the summer harbour to the west and the winter harbour immediately east.

    Kızlar Monastery

    The remains of a nunnery of the Trebizond period, originally named for the Panagia who is guarded by God. It stands on two terraces on the flank of Boztepe above Trabzon, enclosed by a high wall.
