   Anıtkabir

   Atatürk's mausoleum, built between 1944 and 1953 on a hill above the city he made the capital. Soil from every Turkish province was brought for the garden, the sarcophagus in the Hall of Honour weighs forty tonnes, and the changing of the guard is watched by school groups in tears.

   Kocatepe Mosque

   Mosque in Ankara finished in 1987 after twenty years' work, holding twenty-four thousand worshippers. Its four minarets rise eighty-eight metres and follow Ottoman models.

   Museum of Anatolian Civilizations

   A museum in two restored Ottoman market buildings holding the best Hittite collection in the world, along with the finds from Çatalhöyük — a settlement of nine thousand years ago with no streets, entered through the roofs. It is the single most important museum in Turkey for prehistory.

   Atakule

   A tower of 1989 in Çankaya, a hundred and twenty-five metres high on ground that is already a hill, so it is visible from most of Ankara. A revolving restaurant and an observation deck sit on top of a shopping centre.

   Ankara Castle

   A citadel whose Byzantine walls of the seventh century were built with whatever Roman stone was lying about — column drums and inscriptions are set into them sideways. A village survives inside the walls, and the view runs to the steppe.

   Temple of Augustus in Ankara

   A temple of about 20 BC whose walls carry the most complete surviving copy of the Res Gestae, Augustus's own account of his reign, in Latin and Greek. It is the primary document for the founding of the Roman empire, and it stands in a mosque courtyard.

   Ankara Painting and Sculpture Museum

   A museum of Turkish painting and sculpture opened in 1930 on Atatürk's instruction, in a building put up for a Turkish hearth society. It holds the whole arc of Turkish art from the late Ottoman academies to the present, which no other collection does as fully.

   Aslanhane Mosque

   A Seljuk mosque of the 1290s and one of the oldest in Turkey, its flat roof carried on twenty-four wooden columns with reused Roman capitals. The tiled and carved stucco mihrab is among the finest of its period anywhere.

   Ethnography Museum of Ankara

   The ethnography museum, built between 1925 and 1928 in the new capital's first architectural style. Atatürk's coffin lay in it from 1938 until 1953 while his mausoleum was being built, and the room is preserved.

    Hacı Bayram Mosque

    An Ottoman mosque built against the wall of the Roman temple of Augustus, beside the tomb of Hacı Bayram Veli, the fifteenth-century founder of a Sufi order. It is the most visited shrine in Ankara and the crowds around it are constant.

   A museum in Ankara in Turkey. The building served as the Grand National Assembly of Turkey from 1924 to 1960, which is why it is also called the second parliament house.

   Roman Baths of Ankara

   A third-century Roman bath complex excavated between 1937 and 1944 and left open as a site. The brick pillars of the hypocaust that carried the hot floors survive in rows, which makes the heating system unusually easy to read.

   Hittite Sun Course Monument

   A monument on Sıhhiye Square in Ankara in Turkey. The sculptor Nusret Suman made it in honour of the Hittites and it was erected in 1978.

   Ulucanlar Prison Museum

   A former state prison in Ankara converted into a museum by the Altındağ district council. It opened in 2011 and was the first prison museum in Turkey; many of the country's writers and politicians were held in it.

   Ankara Palas

   The first modern hotel in the new capital, designed by Vedat Tek in 1924 in the Turkish neoclassical manner and finished in 1928, when deputies lodged in it. It is now a state guest house and its ballroom was where the republic's society was invented.

    Ahmet Hamdi Akseki Mosque

    One of the largest mosques in Turkey, in Ankara. It opened in 2013, combines Seljuk and Ottoman forms, and stands on the same site as the headquarters of the national directorate of religious affairs.
