   Alhóndiga de Granaditas

   A former grain store in the city of Guanajuato, now the regional museum. It replaced an older grain exchange by the river, and its name means the grain market in both Arabic and Spanish; the insurgents stormed it in 1810 in the first battle of Mexican independence.

   Basílica Colegiata de Guanajuato

   The yellow baroque church at the head of Guanajuato's main square, completed in 1696. It holds a wooden image of the Virgin that Charles V sent to the town in 1557, said to have lain hidden from the Moors for centuries in a cave in Spain.

   La Valenciana Church

   An eighteenth-century Churrigueresque church at the mouth of the La Valenciana mine, which produced the richest silver vein in Mexico. The mine owner Antonio de Ordóñez built it in thanks to his patron Saint Cajetan, and it is known for its gilded altarpieces.

   Alfredo Dugès Museum

   A natural history museum in the University of Guanajuato holding the collections of Alfredo Duges, the French-born naturalist who taught here from the 1850s and described dozens of Mexican reptiles and amphibians. His type specimens are still kept in the jars he prepared.

   Castillo de Santa Cecilia

   A hotel built in the shape of a medieval castle on the hill above Guanajuato, on the road up to the Valenciana mine. Battlements, towers and a rough stone courtyard look down over the city, and guests come as much for the view as for the rooms.
