   Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park

   A marine park of 1996 covering the reefs off the island's west coast, where the current runs steadily north. That current is the point: divers drift along Palancar and Santa Rosa and the boat follows them rather than the other way round.

   San Gervasio

   A Maya site in the north of Cozumel off the Yucatán peninsula. Its pre-conquest name was Tantun Cuzamil, the flat rock in the land of swallows, and it was the centre of the cult of Ixchel, goddess of childbirth, fertility, medicine and weaving.

   The southern tip of Cozumel, part of an ecological park of a square kilometre taking in reef, beach, lagoon and low forest. The Celarain lighthouse on the point forms part of the maritime museum.

   Chen Rio

   A beach on the southeastern coast of Cozumel, named after the river behind it. The east coast is generally unsafe for swimming because no reef shelters it, but a rock ledge here cuts off a pool from the sea, which draws people to it.
