   Guadalajara Cathedral

   The cathedral of Guadalajara, begun in 1561 and finished in 1618, whose two yellow-tiled neo-Gothic spires replaced towers destroyed by the earthquake of 1818. Murillo's Assumption of the Virgin hangs in the sacristy and eleven altars fill the nave.

   Basilica of Our Lady of Zapopan

   A Franciscan sanctuary at Zapopan finished in 1730, holding a small maize-paste image of the Virgin made in the 1540s and credited with ending plague and drought. Over a million people accompany it back from the cathedral to Zapopan on 12 October each year.

   Guggenheim Guadalajara

   A museum planned for Guadalajara and never built. Enrique Norten's design of 2005 would have hung galleries over the edge of the Barranca de Huentitán; the project was cancelled for lack of funding.

   Basílica de San Felipe Neri

   A baroque church of the Oratorians, built in the second half of the 18th century from the pink stone quarried near the city. Its carved facade and tiled dome mark it as one of the finest colonial churches in Guadalajara.

   A Latter-day Saints temple at Zapopan in the Guadalajara area, dedicated in 2001, with white walls and a single spire. Only members in good standing enter beyond the lobby.

   Arcos de Guadalajara

   A monumental gateway of twin arches and towers built in 1942 on the western approach to Guadalajara. It marks the entrance to the city and holds a tourist office and a viewing terrace.

   Guadalajara Zoo

   A zoo opened in 1988 on the edge of the Huentitán canyon, and among the largest collections in Latin America with about 2,700 animals. A glass skywalk projects out over the canyon, which is 600 metres deep at that point.

   Panteón de Belén

   A cemetery of 1848 in Guadalajara, closed to burials since 1896, with neoclassical arcades of niches around a garden of cypresses. Its legends — a vampire, a child afraid of the dark — support nightly guided tours.

   Plaza Nuevo Progreso

   A bullring of 1967 in Guadalajara seating about 16,500, one of the largest in Mexico, and used for concerts and wrestling as well as bullfights. Its season runs alongside the October festivals.

   Roundabout of the disappeared

   A roundabout on Avenida Chapultepec that families of Mexico's disappeared renamed in 2020, covering the Niños Héroes monument with the names and photographs of missing relatives. Over a hundred thousand people are registered as disappeared nationally; the site is maintained by the families themselves.

   An anti-monument installed by protesters on the Plaza de Armas in Guadalajara for Giovanni López, a young man who died in police custody in June 2020. Anti-monuments are placed without official permission and left as a standing accusation.

   An eighteenth-century Carmelite church in central Guadalajara. The convent that stood with it was broken up in the nineteenth century; the church and its carved front survive beside a cultural centre in the remaining buildings.

   Templo de Jesús María

   A church of the 18th century in the middle of Guadalajara, properly the sanctuary of Our Lady of the Lightning after an image said to have survived a strike. It is listed as a historic monument by the national institute of anthropology and history.

   A church begun in 1574 and finished a century later in 1674, built in baroque form for the Augustinians. The cloister beside it now holds the university's school of music, and both are listed as historic monuments.
