   Cancun Underwater Museum

   Some five hundred concrete figures by Jason deCaires Taylor, sunk off Cancún from 2009 to draw divers away from the natural reef and to give coral something to grow on. The casts are of local residents; the sculptures are meant to disappear under growth, and are doing so.

   Puerto Juárez

   A district two kilometres north of central Cancún on the Caribbean shore. It was the fishing village that existed here before the resort was planned, was absorbed into the city in 1990, and still runs boats to Isla Mujeres.

   El Rey archaeological site

   A Maya site in the hotel zone of Cancún in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. Its low platforms and shrines are surrounded by iguanas and the resorts of the strip.

   El Meco

   A Maya site on the Caribbean coast of northern Quintana Roo, eight kilometres north of Cancún. In the Postclassic it was an important port and trading station on the east coast, and ceremonial buildings, altars and shrines stand around its central plaza.

   Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc National Park

   A marine park declared in 1996 over the reefs off Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc, protecting the northern end of the Mesoamerican barrier reef. Hundreds of Jason deCaires Taylor's concrete figures stand on the sea floor within it as an artificial reef.

   Hotel Zone

   Twenty-two kilometres of sandbar between the Caribbean and the Nichupté lagoon, laid out from 1970 to a government plan and holding most of Cancún's hotel rooms. The beach on the seaward side is public by law along its whole length.

   An open-air market in the downtown, away from the hotel strip, selling crafts, hammocks and silver, with a ring of small restaurants around the outside charging what people who live here pay.
